INTRODUCTION

Yoga is a very ancient system of physical, mental,

and spiritual practices or disciplines that
originated in India. According to Patanjali, asana
means, Sthira sukham asanam, or, that

position which is comfortable and steady. In

Bhavanopanishad, “To sit in a comfortable
position or posture for everlasting period is called
Asana”. There are different types of
asanas Meditative Asana, Relaxative Asana and
Corrective Asana.

The modern world is facing a pandemic of lifestyle

disorders that require changes to be
made consciously by individuals themselves, and
yogasanas can be preventive measures in

fending off lifestyle diseases as they provide

physiological advantages.
YOGA PRACTICE

IN INDIA
Yoga essentially is a traditional and time hono Indian

holistic system of personal, physical, mental and

spiritual wellness focusing on all-round unification of

body, mind and soul. It is a perfect example of a lively

interaction between the precepts and practice. Like

other Indian traditions, this system is also handed

down from master (Guru) to disciple (Shishya), who

after rigorous practice attains mastery in the system

and qualifies to become a master himself and teach

others. The presence of Yoga is well documented in

Indian textual tradition right from the Rig Veda to

Satapatha Brahmana to philosophical treatises like

the Upanishads and the Bhagvad Gita before sage

Patanjali systematized it in his Yogasutras. After

Patanjali, many great sages and Yoga masters

contributed their bit for the intellectual preservation

and furtherance of this system through their

treatises. According to Indian mythology, Lord Siva

was the first teacher of this system. As per Yogic

scriptures the practice of Yoga leads to the union of

individual consciousness with universal

consciousness and thus indicates a perfect harmony

between these elements.

BENEFITS OF ASANA

& PRANAYAM

The therapeutic benefits are drawn from the close

connection of coordinated posture with the soul

and mind of the body thus giving a rewarding yoga

moment. There are several benefits of asana and

pranayama ranging from a better link between the

physical and spiritual being of an individual.

Further, there are several physiological processes

and psychological ones in the body that are

brought to harmony by asana including the

betterment of immunity and circulatory system.

Stress, especially in the joints of the body, is also

eliminated with proper asana since the whole

body is made to be in a perfect posture with

longer meditation periods.

Apart from the enhancement of the spiritual

province, theare is also elevated muscle health in

the body and improvement of blood circulation.

This is a great combination that ensures that
the whole body is in perfect health shape.
Asana will provide better and clear observations

about the things that are beneficial for life.

MALNUTRITION
What Is Malnutrition?
Malnutrition is a condition that results from

nutrient deficiency or overconsumption.It can

lead to serious health issues, including stunted

growth, eye problems, diabetes and heart

disease.

Types of malnutrition include (1, 2Trusted

Source):
Undernutrition:-
This type of malnutrition results from not

getting enough protein, calories or

micronutrients. It leads to low weight-for-height

(wasting), height-for-age (stunting) and weight-

for-age (underweight).

Overnutrition:-
Overconsumption of certain nutrients, such as

protein, calories or fat, can also lead to

malnutrition. This usually results in overweight

or obesity.
Common Causes of Malnutrition
1-Food insecurity or a lack of access to sufficient and

affordable food: Studies link food insecurity in both

developing and developed nations to malnutrition

2-Digestive problems and issues with nutrient absorption:

Conditions that cause malabsorption, such as Crohn’s

disease, celiac disease and bacterial overgrowth in the

intestines, can cause malnutrition.

3-Excessive alcohol consumption: Heavy alcohol use can

lead to inadequate intake of protein, calories.

4-Mental health disorders: Depression and other mental

health conditions can increase malnutrition risk

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

Preventing and treating malnutrition involves addressing

the underlying causes.

Government agencies, independent organizations and

schools can play a role in preventing malnutrition.

Research suggests that some of the most effective ways

to prevent malnutrition include providing iron, zinc and

iodine pills, food supplements and nutrition education to

populations at risk of undernutrition (45Trusted Source).

In addition, interventions that encourage healthy food

choices and physical activity for children and adults at

risk of overnutrition may help prevent overweight and

obesity (46Trusted Source, 47Trusted Source).

OBESITY
Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive

amount of body fat. Obesity isn't just a cosmetic

concern. It's a medical problem that increases the

risk of other diseases and health problems, such as

heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and

certain cancers.

CAUSES
Obesity is generally caused by eating too much and

moving too little.

If you consume high amounts of energy,

particularly fat and sugars, but do not burn off the

energy through exercise and physical activity,

much of the surplus energy will be stored by the

body as fat.
TREATMENT
Choosing healthier foods (whole grains, fruits and

vegetables, healthy fats and protein sources) and

beverages
Limiting unhealthy foods (refined grains and sweets,

potatoes, red meat, processed meat) and beverages

(sugary drinks)
Increasing physical activity
Limiting television time, screen time, and other “sit time”
Improving sleep
Reducing stress

Prevention
Treatment goals should be realistic and adapted to the

individual patient (e.g., experiences, resources, risks)

(EL 4, RG B). Goals are:

1-Long-term weight reduction:
BMI 25 to 35 kg/m2: >5% of initial weight
BMI > 35 kg/m2: >10% of initial weight
2-Improvement in obesity-related risk factors
3-Reduction in obesity-related diseases
4-Lowering of risk of early death
5-prevention of inability to work and early retirement
6-Reduction of psychosocial disorders
7-Improvement of quality of life.
