Maximum Allowable Longitudinal Compressive Stress

The maximum allowable longitudinal compressive stress used in the design of cylindrical shells or
tubes, either seamless or butt welded, subjected to loadings that produce longitudinal compression
in the shell or tube shall be the smaller of the following values:

A) Maximum Allowable tensile stress value as per Section II, Part D, Subpart 1.

B) Maximum allowable stress calculated as per below steps:

Step-1: Determine “A” using following equation

A = 0.125 / (Ro/t)

where; Ro = outside radius of cylindrical shell or tube


t = the minimum required thickness of the cylindrical shell or tube

Step-2: Using the value of “A” calculated in Step-1, E= modulus of elasticity of material, and
temperature, for referring to the applicable material chart in Section II, Part D, and Subpart
3 find value of “B” as follows

Move vertically to an intersection with the modulus of elasticity of material and


temperature line for the design temperature.

Interpolation can be done for temperature lies in between line for intermediate
temperatures.

If tabular values in Section II, Part D, Subpart 3 are used, value that lies between two
adjacent tabular values for a specific temperature, linear interpolation or any other rational
interpolation method may be used to determine a B.

Such interpolation can be used to determine B value at an intermediate temperature that


lies between two sets of tabular values, after determining B values for each set of tabular
values.

If value of A falls at right end of the modulus of material/temperature line, assume an


intersection with the horizontal projection of the upper end of the modulus of
material/temperature line.

If tabular values are used, the last (maximum) tabulated value shall be used. For values of A
falling to the left of the modulus of material/temperature line follow equation mention in
Step-4
