ACTIVITY: Add 2 activities for each of the seven (9) phonological awareness skills given
above. Consider the children’s context and experience to come up with words that are relevant
and meaningful to them. (In Sinugbuanong Binisaya)

Skill Activity

Discriminating Determine if the two words begin or end with the same sound.
“Unsa ang pareho og tingog sa mga pulong nga gihatag”
 Aso – abo
 Tasa – basa
 Sulat – hulat
Identify Sounds and their sources – the students are to identify
what sound does each letter produce.
Asa niini ang adunay magkapareho nga tingog ug asa kini
naggikan?
 Aso – Abo
A–aaaa
O–oooo

Clap for Me! - Children clap in response to the number of words,


syllables, or sounds in a sentence. “Pila ka pakpak ang buhaton
kung musulti ko og mga pulong nga ‘Buotan ako nga bata!”
 Words – Buotan-ako-nga-bata (4 ka pakpak)
Counting  Syllables – Bu-o-tan a-ko nga ba-ta (8 ka pakpak)
Cut the Word into Syllables – the students are instructed to
correctly cut each word and divide this by syllable.
Sample Word: Sapatos – /sa/ /pa/ /tos/

Rhyming Encourage kids to listen to books’ rhymes and recognize them.


Children should be instructed to listen for rhymes before reading
and to raise their hands if they hear any. Alternately, pause before
the rhymed word and have the kids come up with it.
Sample word from book/s: gabon - sabon
Rhyming words are used by kids to form word families. The
instructor can begin by providing examples and showing the
students how to accomplish it.
 Iro – igo
 Kamot – samot
 Kalo - salo

Tongue Ticklers - Children makes tongue twisters.


 Si mama mamaligya og mangga sa merkado.
Alliteration Play with children’s names and point out things that begin with the
same beginning sound as their names.
 Peter – pito – pato – paso

While the teacher blends blocks or letters to show blending, the


students say the sounds in a word and then “say them fast.”
 S – sssssss
 A – aaaaaa
 K – kkkkk
Blending
 O – ooooo

Nakakita ko og – Choose something from the classroom, like a


pencil. Then, after saying, “Nakakita ko og lapis” instruct your
students to combine the sounds to describe what they see.

Segmenting Children pronounce the entire word before saying each syllable or
sound.
 PASKO – /Pas/ /ko/

Pasko
Oral toy-talk - Inform the kids that the puppet only comprehends
sound-talk, and create scenarios in which you must partition words
for the puppet.
Sample: Unsa mn ang gusto nga kaonon sa duwaan/puppet?
Saging
As you give the word ‘Saging’ to the puppet, the kids must
segment it with you.

Manipulating Deleting, adding, and substituting sounds and syllables.


Children hear words and then omit the first syllable when speaking
them.
· Deleting
Remove Me! – students are instructed to remove or delete one
letter to make a new word. Sample word: Pako – Ako (letter p
deleted)
Last One, Begone! – deleting the last letter to formulate and make
a new word. Sample word: Putos – puto (letter s from the end was
removed)

Add me Some! – students are instructed to supply letters that can
make a word readable and to form a new word. Sample word:
Utong – Butong
Plus Consonant - Making a consonant blend by adding a
phoneme. Sample word: Bao – Ba /t/ o

Substitutin Word Ladder – instruct your kids on how to alter a single sound

in the word “abo” to create a new term. For instance, you may say
“Ilisan ang letrang /b/ og letrang /s/, unsa nga tingog ang mahimo
niini?” – Abo – Aso
Sticky Notes – Students can make new words by changing a
word’s beginning, middle, or ending sound using sticky notes.
Sample word: Changing the middle word
