Literature is one way for us to hear the voices of the past and work with
the present. It is a way for the present to connect to the possible future. Story
telling is one way for humans to reach out to other humans. It is therapy,
confession, entertainment, and knowledge all in one. Why do we study it?

We learn about history we didn't experience, customs we are not familiar with or
that lead to what we do and perform now, hear voices of men, women,
children, dragons, elves, slaves, aliens, and other characters in order to spark
imagination. We learn to think outside the literal box by reading. It forces your
mind to picture places and experiences and activates our gestalt thinking,
which is crucial next to just sizzling back information.

On the article that we have read, Dr. Anthony Tan a famous Palanca Awardee
on his essays and poetry highlighted 5 major points why literature matters:

1. Literature matters because it is timeless.

 As aforementioned by Dr. Tan on the Epic of Gilgamesh, considered as

the first epic in the history of poetry, he meant that even the long yields of
literature man can always get access of the works even from the old
times.
2. Literature matters because it is universal.

 It was emphasized in the article that literature can be in general; not only
limited to one group of people and belief. One form of literature can be
appreciated by millions of people regardless of their race, culture and
tradition.

3. Literature matters because it is transcendent.

 The reason behind this matter is very heart-warming. Imagining a single

form of literature from a particular country can transcend its purpose and
cross-over people without any intention.

4. Literature matters because it teaches and entertains.

―Literature has a dual function: to instruct and to delight. Next to food,

shelter, and sex, these are the two activities all men want to do — to know
and to entertain or be entertained.‖ –Horace

5. Literature matters because it is a friend to a man.

 Through man’s work and love for literature, it can create deep friendship
across the reason of writing.
