The teacher can group the class. Each group will list the changes they minutes
have noticed as they grow up. They can list separate observations for
boys and girls.

Answer to the guide questions:

1. Puberty is the time that your body begins to develop and change as
you move from child to adult.

2. Both: Pubic hair, height, pimples and change in their voice.

Girls: Development of breast and menstruation.
Boys: enlargement of testes and penis. There are also facial hair
present.

3. Because of these changes, they become more responsible in taking

care of their body. They become aware on how they will act towards
other people.

Puberty is the period when a child gradually changes into a sexually

mature individual and becomes capable of reproduction. A person going
through puberty changes is called an adolescent.

Puberty happens at different times for different children. However, PPT

Explain puberty normally occurs earlier in females than in males. Girls begin slides,

puberty when they reach 10 to 14 years old while boys have it between
12 to 16 years old. When a child is ready to begin puberty, the pituitary
gland in the brain releases special hormones that will signal the body to
begin the changes. For boys, the hormones will signal the testes to start
producing testosterone and sperm cells. Testosterone is the hormone
that causes most of the changes in a boy's body during puberty, and
sperm cells are needed for reproduction. For girls, the hormones will
signal the ovaries to begin egg cell maturation and to produce estrogen,
which is responsible for the changes in the girl’s body during puberty.
Egg cells need to mature for fertilization to take place.

During puberty, male and female adolescents undergo many physical

changes. One of which is the growth spurt. The height and weight
increase very rapidly during puberty and adolescents continue to grow
for about 2 to 3 years until they almost reach their adult height. However,
at the end of the puberty stage, the boys tend to become taller than girls.

Both boys and girls also begin to grow hair in the armpits and in their
pubic areas. At first, the hair is thin and light. However, as they go

SUBJECT (TEACHER’S 2
through puberty, the hair becomes longer, thicker, curlier, and darker.
Hair in the legs, arms, and chest also become longer and thicker.

Another is the appearance of pimples or acne. Pimples usually appear in

the face especially in the forehead area because the skin naturally
becomes more oily or greasy as they change.

There are other changes that happen only to male adolescents. One of
the very first things that happen to boys on the onset of puberty is the
enlargement of the testes and penis. Their muscles also develop and
grow bigger, their shoulders broaden, their voice deepens, and facial hair
starts to grow.

For girls, the first sign of puberty is the development of breast. Then,
menarche or the first menstruation occurs, and their body becomes
curvier and their hips become wider.
