Rivalries between colonial powers

● Tensions exist between Britain and France over their colonies in India and
Indochina, though these are eased with a treaty in 1896 when they recognize
each other’s claims.
● The Berlin Conference (1884-1885) kicked off the “scramble for Africa” in the
1880s and 1890s.
● One way in which this plays out is the case of Fachoda, where the French and
British clash heads over territory.
