Habitat vs.

Niche Group Activity:

Group Member Names: Braydon Winkler

Directions:
Step 1. Each of the following words is either an organism, a habitat, or a niche. Among your group, decide
what each one is and label it as H for habitat, N for Niche, or O for organism. Look up any words that you do
not know the meaning of in the textbook.

Student O School H Child between ages human skin H pollinator H

5-18 N
bat O cocoon H pollinator N soil decomposer N herbivore (eats
plants only) N
black bear O butterfly O under a rock H decomposer N carnivore (eats meat
only) N

insects) N

Step 2: For each organism above there is a habitat and niche. Fill out the following table with your group
members. Research using the textbook. At the end you should have 14 sets of organisms, habitats, and
niches.
Organism Habitat Niche
1- Child between ages 5-18 School Student
2bat cave insectivore

3 lion African Savanah carnivore

4 black bear cave omnivore

Step 3: Culminating activity - As a group come up with two examples of your own organisms, their habitats,
and their niche.

Example 1: Organism: Water snake Habitat: Lake Niche: Ecological niche

Example 2: Organism: Rabbit Habitat: Forest Niche: Prey

Definitions:

1. A habitat is the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organisms.

How to tell if it is a habitat: You can tell if it is a habitat because is has to have shelter, water, food, and

2. A niche is a position or role taken by a particular kind of organism within its community. Such a
position may be occupied by different organisms in different localities.

How to tell if it is a niche: Niche is all of the environmental factors and interspecies relationships that
influence the species.
