WHAT ARE SPEECH ACTS?
They believe that language is not
only used to inform or to describe
things, it is often used to
“do things”, to perform acts.
TYPES OF SPEECH ACTS
•Locutionary
•Illocutionary
•Perlocutionary
LOCUTIONARY
- occurs when the speaker
performs an utterance,
or an expression
LOCUTIONARY
Examples:
“Woaaaah….”
“What?”
“It’s a bird!”
Speech Acts
ILLOCUTIONARY
- is the performance or
the act saying something
with a specific intention
ILLOCUTIONARY
Examples:

“ May I see your I.D.?”


“Get out in this classroom!”
“Answer Activity 3 on page 23.”

PERLOCUTIONARY
- happens when what the
speaker says has an
effect on the listener
PERLOCUTIONARY
Examples:

“An Atenean student knows how to fall in line.”


“Texting while driving kills you, your loved ones,
other people!”
“Only fools throw garbage anywhere. Are you
one of them?”
