Impulse and Momentum

Answer the following questions with 2-4 sentences only. Upload your answer in one pdf file.

1. What is impulse?
- Impulse is a term that quantifies the overall effect of a force acting over time. It is
conventionally given the symbol J and expressed in Newton-seconds.

2. What is momentum?
- Momentum is a measurement of mass in motion: how much mass is in how much
motion. It is usually given the symbol p.

3. What is impulse-momentum theorem?

- The impulse-momentum theorem states that the impulse applied to an object will
be equal to the change in its momentum. This theorem shows how a small net force
applied over a long time can be used to produce the same velocity change as a large
net force applied over a short time.

4. Why are motorcycle riders required to wear helmets? (Relate your answer with the
concept of impulse and momentum)

- Hitting the head with as much force as would be exerted by falling off the bike is
enough to cause serious damage to the brain. The momentum the head has before it
falls will be equivalent to the momentum the head will have after it bounces off the
pavement. Therefore, the purpose of a helmet is to minimize the force exerted on the
head by maximizing the absorption of energy by the helmet. When the helmet absorbs
most of the energy, the impulse is carried out over a longer period of time thus
reducing the force exerted on the head.
