Preclassic period the floor of the
Copan Valley was swampy and
prone to seasonal flooding. In the
Early Classic, the inhabitants
flattened the valley floor and
carried out construction projects to
protect the city's architecture from
the effects of flooding.

Copan had great influence on

regional centers throughout
western and central Honduras,
driving the introduction of
Mesoamerican characteristics to

civilization. The remains of the city and the imposing
public squares reveal the three main periods of its
development, before the city was abandoned in the early
9th century AD. The Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza has a
monumental staircase, one of the exceptional structures
of the Mayan culture. On the 10 meter wide steps, there
are more than 1,250 individual glyphs, constituting the
longest known Mayan inscription. After the City was
abandoned, it was swallowed by the jungle which helped
its preservation.

One of the most investigated archaeological centers

from another natural phenomenon is caused by the
Copán River, which surrounds the eastern part of the
main site, causing erosion and leaving an archaeological
cut naturally, the largest in the American continent,
which served to obtain information on the different
phases of construction of the acropolis. A few kilometers
away are also the sites "The Graves" and "Rastrojón",
both with their importance and history.
