INTRODUCTION
he seventh volume in this series of books on scale draw-
T 1s of armored fighting vehicles of World War Il is ded
sated to 1:72 scale drawings of Axis armored vehicles
‘of WW2, and is meant for those AFV modelers who prefer this
very popular small-scale product range. These modelers are
proud to label it as “Braille Scale.” mainly because the parts
fare so small in some cases that you are almost forced to go by
feel
‘The drawings are organized in a more or less chronological
order, with the earliest at the beginning and the late items at the
tnd of their section. This is by no means a complete coverage
of every vehicle from the World War II period, but it will be a
‘great resource for anyone modeling in 1:72 scale and others
‘who merely want a single reference book packed with mutiple~
view AFV plans
The ultimate purpose of this series of books was to try to
present a sequence of World War II military vehicle plan view
scale drawings all in one place. Most of these drawings display
4-view plans, but with some of the smaller vehicles, we were
able to show five or more views, However, no matter how well
the plans are drawn, it will always be necessary to have suf-
ficient photo reference books as well. There are a number of
‘walk around” and close up view series on the market to give
the super detailers all the finer detail they could ask for.
Over the years, scale drawings of various armored vehicles,
hhave appeared in magazines and books, but never all in one
place where they would be easy for the researcher or modeler
to access them, Many different scales have fought for the lime-
Tight, but the more popular ones of late have boiled down to
1:35, 168, and 1:72in the armor-modeling world, With this in
‘mind, we felt that since 1:72 was the second most popular AFV
ale, we should publish the series in this smaller scale also.
‘You will also find a chart at the beginning of this book for
reducing or enlarging any of these drawings to other popu-
lar seales. The quality and accuracy of modern photocopying
should make it possible for you to achieve whatever final scale
‘you require at the lower end of 1:48 and under. However, in
‘ome eases where higher enlargement is required, you may find
‘certain degree of roughness,
‘These drawings have been created using vector-based draw.
ing applications with line weights ranging from .25 point to 1
point, and thus should easily hold the finer detail when copy
ing. The bulk of these drawings were done over a period of ten
years and are currently among the most precise and accurate
ABV drawings available, You will also notice a variance in the
drawings as the art style changes slightly over the years but
eventually supports shading in the majority of the later works.

When Lt. Col. Heinz Guderian gained authority in 1931, fl
he and Gen, Lutz agreed that the future makeup of the
German Army must have armored troops in the form of
panzer divisions,
In order not to alarm other world powers, Germany
kept its medium tank programs under cover and turned
its attention toa series of ight tank designs. These light
tanks could be manufactured cheaply and in quantities
‘great enough to support serious training programs. An
‘order for 150 machines was placed in the early 1930s,

First produced in 1935, the Pz Kpfw.| Aust. B served along-
sie the earlier Aust. A light tanks. The Aust. version had
soon proved to be underpowered for serious cross-country
operation, and a larger engine was required. A 6cylinder
Maybach NL 38 TR water-cooled engine was fitted, along
with an improved transmission. The most distinguishing
features of the Aust. Bare the addition of a fithroadwheel to
accommodate the larger engine, four return rollers, a single
muffler at right rear, and a raised rear idler wheel.
Both the Aust. and B models were first used in Spain,
but proved dismally inferior to the Russian 26s they

began to start towing the main gun behind to save the tank's suspen-
sion. The total production appears to have been just over 40,
