Defining Hazardous Area

HAZRDOUS AREA

1. A Hazardous Area is considered to be an area where an explosive atmosphere is or may be


expected to be present which requires special precautions to be taken for the construction,
installation and use of electrical equipment.

2. Hazardous areas are locations where the potential for fire or explosion exists because of gases,
dust, or easily ignitable fibers or flyings in the atmosphere.

3. All areas within a distance of a radius of 90 meters of a well or wellhead tank or separator or a
place likely to contain accumulation of inflammable gas or vapor shall be designated as an
Hazardous Area as per Clause 340(1) of Oil & Gas (Safety in Drilling and Production) Regulations
1974.
