1. Consider the conical water-tank system shown in Fig. 1. The flow through the valve is turbulent and is
related to the head 𝐻 by:

𝑄 = 0.005√𝐻

where 𝑄 is the flow rate measured in m3/sec and 𝐻 is in meters.

Suppose that the head is 2m at t=0.What will be the head at 𝑡 = 60 sec?

2. Consider the liquid level system shown in Fig. 2. At steady state the inflow rate is 𝑄̅ and the outflow rate
is also 𝑄̅ . Assume that at 𝑡 = 0 the inflow rate is changed from 𝑄̅ to 𝑄̅ + 𝑞𝑖 where 𝑞𝑖 (𝑡) is a small quantity.
The disturbance input is 𝑞𝑑 (𝑡) which is also a small quantity. Drive the mathematical model of the system
relating ℎ2 (𝑡) to both 𝑞𝑖 (𝑡) and 𝑞𝑑 (𝑡). The capacitances of tanks-1 and 2 are 𝐶1 and 𝐶2 respectively.

3. Consider the liquid level system shown in Fig. 2. At steady state the inflow rate and the outflow rate are
both 𝑄̅ and the flow rate between the tanks is zero. The heads of tanks-1 and are both 𝐻̅ . At 𝑡 = 0 the inflow
̅ ̅
rate is changed from 𝑄 to 𝑄 + 𝑞 where 𝑞(𝑡) is a small quantity. The resulting changes in the heads (ℎ1 and
ℎ2 ) and flow rates (𝑞1 and 𝑞2 ) are assumed to be small. The capacitances of tanks-1 and 2 are 𝐶1 and
𝐶2 respectively. The resistance of the valve between the tanks is 𝑅1 and that of the outflow valve is 𝑅2 . Drive
the mathematical models for the system when 𝑞(𝑡) is the input and 𝑞2 (𝑡) is the output.
