Many people are unaware of or misinformed about mental health issues. In the twenty-first century,
it is evident that the majority of university students struggle with emotional and mental health
issues. Depression is a common and serious medical condition that has a negative impact on one’s
feelings, thoughts, and actions. Universities exert enough pressure on students to achieve ideal
graduation rates to diagnose them with the condition. According to Parekh (2017), it can lead to
feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in previous activities.

People all over the world experience feelings of sadness, helplessness, worthlessness, and guilt as a
result of depression. As many as one in a hundred people may experience depression at any given
time, according to some surveys, and approximately 25 percent of the population may experience
significant depression at some point in their lives (Depression, 1993). Depression can occur for a
variety of reasons and affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Depression seems to be
more common in women than in men. However, rather than a biological cause, some professionals
believe that men are underdiagnosed (Breton, 1996). Depression, which was once thought to mostly
affect adults, is now more common in younger people, like college students. Anxiety, fear of failure,
and the student’s environment can all contribute to depression in college students.
