    ASSIMILATION

    The process by which one sound influences the neighbouring sound, either by prolonging a
    distinctive feature of the preceding sound or anticipating a distinctive feature of the following
    sound.

    Ten pigs_________the alveolar sound /n/ has to prepare the way to become bilabial, being
    pronounced by the bilabial sharing the same point of articulation /m/, thus /tempigz/. In the
    same way, as /g/ is voiced, it is easier to retain the preceding voicing by turning the plural
    into /z/.
