CHAPTER 1

Jane is an orphan who lives with his aunt and his cousins. Nobody loves
her there. Her cousin, John Reed, bullies her. She always hides behind the
chair to read. Once her cousin hit her with a book. She told him off and
she was taken to the Red Room as a punishment. This was the room
where her uncle, Mr. Reed, died nine years ago. He had taken her to his
house when her mother died and took care of her.
In the Red Room, she saw a light and she thought it was her uncle’s ghost.
She tried to open the door but it was locked. She called for Bessie, Then,
she fainted.
When she got up she was in her bed with the doctor. He suggested her
aunt sending her to Lowood school. She was happy because she wanted
to learn drawing, singing and French.
Jane’s father was a poor churchman. Her mother’s family didn’t’ approve
of their love. They died of typhoid fever.
CHAPTER 2
Lowood was a big school with a lot of pupils who lived there. They wore
brown uniforms. It is a religious school, they read the Bible twice a day. It
is a school for poor orphans. She met a friend at school, Helen Burns. They
had classes in the mornings and in the afternoons.
The headmister is Mr. Brocklehurst, a churchman. He made Jane feel
embarrassed in front of the class and forbade the other girls to speak to
her.
Half of the girls got ill with typhoid fever, except Jane. Helen died because
of it. The school was in bad conditions because it was wet and dirty.
The school was moved to another place.
Jane became a teacher and taught there for two years. After that, she
looked for a job as a governess. A governess was someone who took care
of children and taught them how to read, write, draw and play some
instrument. She posted an advertisement and she got a job as the
caretaker of an eight-year-old girl called Adele, in Thornfield.
CHAPTER 3
The housekeeper at Thornfield was Mrs. Fairfax. The master of the house
was Adele’s uncle, Mr. Rochester. He was absent from the house most of
the times. The house was ran by the servants ( Leah, John and his wife).
They were nice people. There was one of the servants who laughed very
noisily, Mrs. Grace Pool.
Everybody liked Mr. Rochester. He was a serious and not talkative man
and had strange manners.
Adele was an orphan. She had French ancestors by her mother.
