ACTIVITY 1: ANIMAL VARIATION

Materials Needed: Ink Pad (Alt: Marker, Highlighter)
Inquiry Question: How are animals genetically compared to one another?
Animals can be genetically compared from other animals from their alleles because parents pass half of
their alleles on to their offspring.

Procedure:
1. Collect nine different thumb marks using ink pad, marker, or highlighter
2. Classify each thumb marks, use the given image below for reference:

3. Place each thumb marks side-by-side per type then compare the collected
thumbprints

ACTIVITY 2: PLANT VARIATION

Materials: Photos of three species of plants of your choosing
(Recommended: Rose; Cactus; Mayana; Bougainvillea; Orchid)
Inquiry Question: How are plants genetically compared to one another?
Plants experience somatic mutations regularly but they can be genetically
compared by their DNA.
Procedure:
1. Collect at least one photo of each species
2. Compare the flowers or leaves of each species. Include their shape, color, and
texture
Data:
Plants: ROSE, ORCHIDS AND CACTUS
THE PLANTS IN THE PICTURE IS ROSE,ORCHIDS AND CACTUS. THEY ARE ALL EASY TO PLANT AND EASY TO
GROW BUT IN SOME WAYS THEY ARE DIFFERENT. FOR EXAMPLE EACH SPECIES HAS THEIR OWN PLANT
TYPE. THE ROSE IS WATERING PLANT SO IS ORCHIDS, IN THE OTHER HAND CACTUS IS NON-FLOWERING
TYPE.ROSE SHAPE IS PETALS TUCKED INTO A CUP SHAPE, STANDING STRAIGHT UP AND FLATTENED
AGAINST EACH OTHER, AND THE ORCHID’S SHAPE IS BILATERALLY SYMMETRICAL WHILE THE CACTUS
SHAPE IS CYLINDRICAL OR FLATTENED IN SHAPE. THEIR COLORS ARE QUITE DIFFERENT TOO. THE ROSE
COLORS ARE VERY COLORFUL THERE IS RED,WHITE, PINK, YELLOW, PURPLE,LIGHT PINK, BLUE ETC.
ORCHIDS ARE ALSO COLORFUL THERE IS WHITE, PURPLE, PINK WHILE THE CACTUS IS COLOR GREEN
MOST OF THE TIME. ROSE PETALS TEXTURE ARE VERY FINELY TEXTURED AND VEINED BUT FEEL SMOOTH
AND SLIGHTLY COOL TO THE TOUCH, ORCHIDS IS A WAXY OR VELVETY TEXTURE AND THE CACTUS
TEXTURE HAS THICK, LEAFLESS STEMS COVERED IN PRICKLY SPINES OR SHARP SPIKES

ACTIVITY 3: MENDELIAN TRAITS

Specimen: Human Earlobes
Inquiry Question: How would you describe the three basic laws of Gregor
Mendel?
Gregor Mendel proposed three laws and those are The Law of Segregation, The Law of
Independent Assortment, and The Law of Dominance. The first one is The Law of Segregation,
this is about the separation of gene variants and reproductive cells, the allele of one parent will
be separate into the gametes when gametes are created. Next is The Law of Independent
Assortment, this is about the separation of different genes during meiosis. Last is The Law of
Dominance, this first law of Mendel talks about dominant trait always dominated the recessive
traits.
Procedure:
1. Classify the earlobes of your family. Use the image below for your reference

2. Construct Tree Diagram of your family’s earlobes (grandparents, parents, siblings,

and yourself)

Data:
ACTIVITY 4: NON-MENDELIAN TRAITS
Specimen: Human Hair
INQUIRY QUESTION: Why are traits like hair color, hair type, and height known as
“Non-Mendelian” traits?
They are know as Non Mendelian traits because the hair color, hair type, and height are polygetic
traits. Alleles are spread over multiple genes and it has complete dominance.
1. Classify the hair of your family. Use the image below for your reference:

2. Construct Tree Diagram of your family’s hair
