WHAT IS VOC?? SOURCES OF VOC EMISSION

VOC is any organic compound that

evaporates readily to the atmosphere
at room temperature, e.g. Carbon
monoxide, carbon dioxide, alcohol,
gasoline, etc.
VOC CAUSE OZONE FORMATION
In the high layers of the
atmosphere, Ozone acts as a
protective sunscreen that shields us
from the high levels of UV radiation
coming from the sun.
ozone present in the upper
troposphere acts as a greenhouse
gas, absorbing some of the infrared
energy emitted by the earth.
At ground-level, however, it can be
harmful to plants, animals,
and humans
EFFECTS OF OZONE AT GROUND LEVEL…
➢Irritation of the respiratory system, causing coughing, throat irritation, and/or an uncomfortable
sensation in the chest.
➢Reduced lung function, making it more difficult to breathe deeply and vigorously..
➢Aggravation of asthma When ozone levels are high.
➢Inflammation and damage to the lining of the lungs. if this type of inflammation happens
repeatedly over a long time period (months, years, a lifetime), lung tissue may become
permanently scarred, resulting in permanent loss of lung function and a lower quality of life
➢There is evidence of significant reduction in agricultural yields because of increased
ground-level ozone and pollution which interferes with photosynthesis

INDOOR AIR POLLUTANT: FORMALDEHYDE
Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with strong
pungent odor, can easily dissolve in water,
alcohol or ether etc. It has been confirmed as
carcinogenic by World Health Organization.
It’s also one of the large family of chemical
compounds called Volatile Organic Compounds.
It can be detected by many individuals at parts p
er million (ppm).
SOURCES OF FORMALDEHYDE
➢FURNITURE, FLOORING, STAIRS, CABINETS AND MORE
Glues that use formaldehyde as a building block are exceptional bonding
agents used extensively in cabinetry, countertops, moldings, furniture,
shelving and stair systems, flooring and many other household
furnishings.
➢CARS AND TRUCKS
From the front to the rear bumpers, formaldehyde-based materials are
key to the manufacture of automobiles, and used to make components
for the transmission, electrical system, engine block, door panels, axles
and brake shoes, just to name a few. It's even used in the paint.
➢INKS
Formaldehyde-based materials are used to produce the dollar bills we
spend every day, the documents we print from our computers and the
ink used in books, magazines and newspapers.
➢WRINKLE-FREE CLOTHING
In textiles, formaldehyde-based materials help bind dyes and pigments
to fabrics and prevents the colors from running. These materials help
improve a fabric's resistance to wrinkles, ease clothing care and
maintenance.
WHY IS FORMALDEHYDE HARMFUL?
➢Research has determined that carpets, furniture, textiles, construction glues,
insulation materials have formaldehyde releasing periods of 3 ~15 years into
the indoor air when the temperature and humidity change.

• 0.05 – 0.06 ppm – Children may breathe heavily

• ~ 0.08 ppm – Adults will sense a peculiar smell & feel uncomfortable

• ~ 0.4 ppm – Eye Irritation /lachrymation (excessive tearing)

• ~ 24.6 ppm – Fatal to Human Health Eg: Cancer

Quick Fact: One in five people are sensitive to formaldehyde.

SHIFT IN COATING INDUSTRY
GREEN IS GOOD SOLVENT TO WATER
VOC REGULATIONS FOR PAINTS ACROSS WORLD
VOC IN COATING INDUSTRY
➢When new paint is drying, indoor VOC levels can be 1000 times higher than outdoor levels. Paint
releases VOCs into the air. Because of the large surface areas typically covered by paint in a room,
VOC emissions can be significant.
➢ A room that is 12x12 feet will have a painted wall and ceiling surface are close to 432 ft2 which is three
times the exposed area of a flooring or ceiling product. Since paints are often applied in occupied space,
and VOC emissions can continue even 6 months after application, people are more likely to be exposed
to vapors from freshly painted surfaces.

Stricter environmental, clean air and waste legislation continues to drive the coating market toward
“green” chemistry and low VOC chemistry.
SOLVENT BASED COATINGS
➢SOLVENT BASED PAINT ➢Out of total business of decorative paint 30% is
contributed by solvent based paint which include.

SILVER ION TECHNOLOGY
Silver ions perform their deadly work by
punching holes in bacterial membranes and
wreaking havoc once inside. They bind to
essential cell components like DNA, preventing
the bacteria from performing even their most
basic functions.
Silver exhibits low toxicity in the human body,
and minimal risk is expected due to clinical
exposure by inhalation, ingestion, dermal
application or through the urological or
haematogenous route.
Silver ions embedded in the Silver ions destabilise cell membrane,
paint are released via ambient stop respiration and inhibit cell
moisture and enter the cell division, whilst blocking the
membrane respiration of DNA

IDENTIFYING ‘SHIFTING CUSTOMER PREFERENACES’ IN THE
POST PANDEMIC WORLD
● New buying behaviors in this new
normal
Why, what and how consumers buy is changing due to the
COVID-19 outbreak. Consumer priorities have become centered
on the most basic needs, sending demand for hygiene, cleaning
and staples products soaring, while non-essential categories
slump.
● The ever-increasing focus on health
and wellness
CPG brands should heed this change and make it a priority to
support healthy lifestyles for consumers, shoppers and
employees. Having a “health strategy” will be a strategic
differentiator for the foreseeable future.
