Tragic family incident

While I was in 1st grade, I had one of my first traumatic experiences. It was a rough time; we all
had a rough time recovering from it. I was 6 years old when it happened and being that young with
something like that happening hurt. I remember the year 2015, something traumatic happened that
changed us all. By us “all” I mean my mother, my father, my sister, close family, and my dear aunt.
Within minutes, our lives changed. You may be wondering what happened, but first let me tell you a
little bit about the past. I was close with my uncle Jim; he was practically my second. We spent time
together every weekend, we would do things like, get ice cream, go on bike rides, take a little road trip,
and such. He made each weekend an adventure.
Thinking back on it now, he died on December 12 th of 2015. Who is “he” you may be wondering. He was
my uncle, my best friend. That day will never be forgotten. Throwback to that night we heard the news,
we all rushed to the hospital to check and hear the story of what happened. When we arrived in the
room my aunt, who was his wife, was in tears, she was hysterical. We heard the full story, my uncle got
in a car accident. There was a drunk driver on the road and at a stoplight the drunk driver rammed into
my uncles’ car. There was severe damage to his body overall and he was under anesthetics when we
came. We were worried about how my aunt would take the whole situation, especially if things did not
go as planned.
He had internal bleeding in his chest. Doctor Frem told us “We did a CT scan on Jim, and it looks like he
has internal bleeding in his chest area, we looked at his medical history and he seems to be healthy
overall so there is a slight chance we can resolve this issue in an operation.” “Do whatever you can to
give him at least a few more years of life, there's so much we haven’t done together, so many more
things to explore in life” my aunt Ann said. “We have already scheduled an operation for him in the
morning. So, all we can do is just hope he holds up over the night.” Doctor Frem said. We all stood there
in shock, because there was a large chance, he would not make it. We decided we would stay by his side
until the end no matter what. So as hours passed, he was still out because of anesthetics. As it is nearing
the night, we decided that My dad would go pick up some things to sleep with and we would stay at the
hospital overnight.
While we were all dozing off, we heard the heart monitor flatline. As nurses rushed into the room and
were trying to get us out of there while checking up on Jim, doctors rushed in as well. “Page doctor Frem
STAT we need him here” one of the nurses said. They put him on a cart and rushed him out of the room
while doing CPR and other things. They told us to get out of the way, which was very understandable, so
we listened. We just stood there in shock watching what was going on. They rushed him to the
operating room where we could not see him. “I wonder what is going on in there, is he going to survive?
What are the most likely scenarios.” my aunt said. Hours passed and we were still in the waiting room,
that cannot be good news. When it was almost midnight one of the doctors walked toward us, without
my uncle, this is going to be bad I can already tell. My aunt says, “Please be good news Frem, I will be
heartbroken if I hear otherwise.” Frem has a gloomy look on his face then starts saying, “The surgery
WOULD’VE gone well, but there was too much damage to really do anything, even if we had started the
operation earlier there was still a slim chance of survival as it is. He went into cardiac arrest which made
saving him ultimately difficult no matter our actions. I am so sorry to inform you, but we could not save
your uncle. "My aunt cried “There must be a way, there must be, it cannot end here it is too early,
please, do something, anything at this point.” It was too late, he was gone, for good.
By the end of December, we all missed him, we had already gone through the funeral and got
him cremated. Our aunt now lived with us because she could not bear the pain of living in her home
with all the memories with Jim. It is hard to imagine that he is now gone. I was glad to have made
memories with him which I will cherish for the rest of my life. This experience shows why you should
make memories and cherish your family before it is too late.
