LA NOCHE ESTRELLADA / THE STARRY NIGHT (1889)

VICENT VAN GOGH

Netherlands (1853-1890)

Van Gogh is a famous painter known for his expressionist style, painting
landscapes, real images and portraits.

This painting, though a night image, was painted one morning at the psychiatric
hospital, where he was admitted for a while for cutting off his ear.
In it he draws the city of Saint-Rémy, which he observes from his window.
Van Gogh's most commonly used style in his paintings was oil, where vivid colors,
and real-life paintings stood out.
On the canvas you can see thick, long and curved brushstrokes, managing to give
movement to the painting, and all this, using the colors that showed its mood at
that time.
The swirls you can see are lines that proved to be a nervous person.
The original title of the painting is "De Sterrennacht".

This painting is considered the best in Van Gogh's collection.

This painting is currently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
