Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch post-impressionist painter, lived a tumultuous life marked by artistic passion

and personal struggles. Born in 1853, van Gogh produced over 2,000 artworks, including around 900
paintings and more than 1,100 drawings and sketches, but he only sold one painting during his lifetime.

His artistic career was characterized by periods of intense creativity, such as his time in Arles where he
painted many of his iconic works like "The Starry Night" and "Sunflowers," but also by bouts of mental
illness and emotional instability. Van Gogh's struggles with mental health led to incidents like the
infamous ear-cutting episode in 1888.

Despite facing rejection and financial hardship, van Gogh remained dedicated to his art until his
untimely death in 1890 at the age of 37, likely by suicide. Tragically, his work gained widespread acclaim
and recognition posthumously, and today he is regarded as one of the most influential artists in Western
art history.
