Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Post-Impressionist artist whose paintings are
among the most popular and recognizable in history. His dramatic brushwork, lush
palette, and mastery of capturing moments in time and light revolutionized art.
Acknowledged only late in his life, his struggles and triumphs have colored exactly
what we imagine of him as an artist.

Sunflowers (1888). Starry night (1889).

Works such as sunflowers and starry night have transcended the world of painting
to become iconic symbols, not just of an artist, but of an entire era and an artistic
movement. Van Gogh's singular way of seeing the world was ahead of his time, so
that, unable to earn a living from his work or to reconcile his doubts about the value
of his achievements and overcome the mental breakdown of him, he committed
suicide by himself. and penniless Van Gogh not only left the world the great gift of
his visionary paintings, but his letters, written to his younger brother Theo (1857-
1891) and others, offer us a fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking insight into
how he fought against Vincent against rejection, indifference and self-harm to
achieve their goals in art and in life
Café terrace at night (1888).

Van Gogh painted some 870 oil paintings in his short career, as well as sketches
and watercolours. In addition, we have a great deal of detail about what Vincent did
when he wasn't painting thanks to his being a prolific letter writer. The artist wrote
more than 650 letters to Theo, of which 41 responses have survived. His younger
sister helped him financially and with materials throughout his career; he also gave
him advice on his art and kept Vincent up to date on what was new in the art world.
