Practical Session
Minimum requirements
• Mobile or Tablet (Android)
• ODK app
• XML questionnaire package

1. Open Data Kit (ODK) is a free, open-source suite of tools that allows data collection
using Android mobile devices and data submission to an online server, even without an
Internet connection or mobile carrier service at the time of data collection.

2. Sharing of ODK Collect Application


• Open Xender in your Mobile
• Select APP
• Select ODK Collect
• Click Send
3. Install ODK Collect Application to your Mobile
• Click ODK Collect
• Click Install
4. Share XML Files to Your ODK-Form File
❖ Open xender
❖ Press FILE
❖ Press Phone Storage
❖ Press ODK Folder
❖ Press form
❖ Select environment.citg.xml
❖ Send
• Share XML Form File for Economy
• Share XML Form File for Humanity
• Share XML Form File for Social Services
• Share XML Form File for Environment
• Copy the XML Forms (Economy, Humanity, Social services) and
❖ Paste in Click Setting →Storage →Internal shared storage →explore→ ODK
Folder →form →Paste

5. Start Data Collection


• Open ODK Collect in your Mobile
• Press Fill Blank Form

6. Fill in a form with ODK


ODK is intuitive and easy to use but requires the user to be systematic and rigorous.
❖ Ensure that daily data is tracked, entered, saved and sent.
• ODK Collect will appear in your application drawer. Select it to launch the
application.
• Press “Fill Blank Form” and select the required one
• Swipe the screen from right to left to go to the next page, or left to right
to go to the previous page
• Track all data: when a beneficiary collects in-kind/ cash at a distribution,
data is entered individually with the relevant date

b. Falling out of survey:
You might end up at the main menu again. Hit the back arrow button and
show up right in the same place you left
• Closing dialogue box: When you hit the back arrow button, 3 options
appear:

- Save changes:
to store the on-going survey and open it later on from the
Main Menu, pressing “Edit Saved Form”
- Ignore changes: – Cautious with this option –
to exit the on-going survey without saving the data
entered
- Cancel:to come back right the same place you left

Crash: best practice is to shut down and restart.


i. A simple text input
The text entry field expands as the user types, and line breaks can be
included. The keyboard displayed depends on the Android device and user
settings.

ii. numerical input


That treats number input and accepts numerals (0123456789).These are the only
characters available on the number keypad displayed with this widget.

iii. The no-calendar appearance


Displays a date selection style. This is especially appropriate for selecting dates
more than one year in the past or future.

iv. The multi select and Single select


Supports all of the same appearance attributes but multi select widget allow more
than one option were as the Single select widget allow to select only one option.

v. Adding group(repeat group)


Loop of questions that will repeat as many times as added by the encoder called Adding
Group idea.
Example in our case Household census Survey – a form used to gather information
about Victim household members can display repeatedly and launched within the
Household form, this is the repeat group concept .you navigate into this sub-form by
selecting “Add group” and continue entering information about individuals in a household.
Why Adding Group-Ex-you may have three victims of Genocide in a single house hold, so
to answer the question “is there a victim in your family?” if there is more than one victim
the same question repeatedly asks.

So using such loop question we can hold many information within a single house hold as
shown below.

How can a user remove wrongly started “add new group” questions?

Once you start Adding a new group it will show you “>1” and starts to add
new group.But if you press add group wrongly and you want to escape
from the current screen there are two short steps.
1.hold Down the question
2.select Remove group from the short menu

vi. Save forms


When you reach the end of the form, make sure “Mark form as finalized” is checked and
press on “Save Form and Exit” >>> Data is saved in the mobile device .

 To enter a new form, press “Fill Blank Form”-→press the current form

7. Edit saved form/checking data

Once a form is saved it is found. To edit a saved form Press edit save form.

Now in order to edit questions or to check if it is complete or not.

i. Select “Go to prompt” icon


ii. The prompt will display list of questions
iii. Select the question to be edited

8. Delete Blank /saved forms

 if you want to Delete saved forms saved/blank form

Click on “Delete saved forms”: Click on the “Blank forms” tab,


select the form(s) to be deleted
and click on “Delete selected”
