1. Tour the UW Fish Collection and see a variety of fish
species!
2. Learn about the internal and external anatomy of fishes
3. Experience dissecting a fish and see how different organs
are laid out inside a fish
4. Work meticulously with a single fish to count and identify
different structures
5. Discover that you can determine a lot about a fish by its
body shape
Form and function

• Morphometrics
• Meristics
• Draw the external

Comparison between two groups:
► We will also have a demo at the back of the class later in lab demonstrating the
differences in body type between a cartilaginous fish (dogfish shark -
Chondrichthyes) and your own bony fish.
► You will be responsible for indicating how two different organs or structures
differ in function between the two groups of fish.
You are responsible for:

1. Drawingsof the external and internal anatomy (two

drawings total = Figures 1 & 2)
2. Table 1. Morphometrics
3. Table 2. Ratios
4. Table 3. Meristics
5. Note body shape for ALL fish examined in lab
6. Results summary
7. Discussion synthesis: relate form and function
8. Your fish vs. shark comparison
