LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• To define motion
• To differentiate motion and rest, scalars &
vectors, distance & displacement.
• To solve the numerical problems.
WHAT IS MEANT BY MOTION?
DISTANCE & DISPLACEMENT
• An object travels from O moves through B
and C and reaches the Point A. Then it
moves along the same path and reaches C
through B. Find the distance and
displacement.
HOME WORK
Qn- A body is moving along a circular path of
radius R. What will be the distance travelled
and displacement of the body when it completes
(i) a complete revolution (ii) half a revolution
(iii) a quarter revolution?
Qn-A body travels a distance of 3Km
towards North and finally 9Km towards East.
(i) What is the total distance travelled?
(ii) What is the resultant displacement?
Qn- If on a round trip you travel l6Km and
then arrive back home:
(i) What distance have you travelled?
(ii) What is your final displacement?
Qn- An object has moved through a distance.
Can it have zero displacement? If yes,
support your answer with an example.

Qn- Which of the following is true for

displacement?
a. It cannot be zero.
b. Its magnitude is greater than the distance
travelled by the object.
• Qn- A farmer moves along the
boundary of a square field of side
10m in 40 s. What will be the
magnitude of displacement of the
farmer at the end of 2 minutes 20
seconds from his initial position?
• Hw- An object starts from A, covers
a distance of 5m towards east turns
through an angle 𝟗𝟎𝟎 left and moves
forward a distance of 3m. Again he
turns through an angle of 𝟗𝟎𝟎 right
reaches the final point B covering a
distance of 1m. Find the distance
and displacement.
