Introduction
The “how to” value the Gospel which I will elaborate on in this
book is that: You value the Gospel by Knowing it; Believing it;
Living it; Proclaiming it, and Growing in it.
11
At least, the Bible points out one thing about the Gospel that
should naturally be the reason why value should be placed on it
above all other things.
The Apostle Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, “…I
delivered to you as of FIRST IMPORTANCE what I also
received…” and what follows is the explanation of the Gospel
message. If the Bible places the Gospel as that which is of First
Importance, what else can we place value on above it?
One very important thing to note is that, the state of man after the
fall in Genesis 3 is the reason for the Mission of God to have the
fallen man brought back to him. At the fall, man was separated
from God.
That is the point where the gospel [good news] comes in.
The gospel is God’s means to have man come back into fellowship
with God by believing it genuinely by faith. Apart from the
gospel, there is no other way by which man can come back into
the fellowship that first existed between him and God.
11
Part I:
11
Chapter One
11
This text of Scripture gives us the content of the gospel. In it, Paul
points out what the gospel is and states clearly that, it is the gospel
that saves anyone who believes (cf. Rom. 1:16). He emphasizes
that the gospel he is talking about is the same gospel he also
received.
To Paul, the gospel is, and ought to be priced above any other
thing in this life. This is clear in the statement, “For I delivered to
you as of first importance …” made by Paul himself. From there,
he moves on to tell the Corinthians what the gospel is all about.
He said, “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also
received that:

11
3. That he was raised on the third day (15:4): God raised Jesus
Christ from the dead to give us hope if we believe in him. All
those who believe in Jesus Christ have the hope of eternal life
of joy and peace in God’s Kingdom. In this same text of
Scripture, we have the living proofs of the fact that Jesus
Christ is alive even right now (15:5-6).
11
Thus, the gospel message is about the death of Jesus Christ, his
burial, and his resurrection for our sake, so that if one puts his trust
in him, he will be saved from eternal condemnation brought by
sin, and be given that life of joy and fulfillment.
The power of the gospel is in the empty cross and the empty tomb
(grave)! The Jesus Christ that Paul presents in this text died and
rose again to life. He is alive, and that is the victory we have as
believers in him (1 Cor. 15:57).
11
Chapter Two
11
The gospel saves man from the wrath of God. The gospel nurtures
believers unto Christian maturity. The gospel brings about the
peace that only Jesus gives. Etc. What only the gospel can do as
the ones highlighted above, nothing else can do it.
Some people believe that through their efforts they can be made
right with God. For example, some think that if they can give
much money to the church, they will be saved; if they can help the
poor irrespective of whether they go to church or not, they will
have a secured place in God’s kingdom; etc. Those are thoughts
provoked by ignorance of the truth.
11
Christ is about the gospel. The gospel has to do with the coming of
Jesus Christ to earth. This is not just an ordinary thing because the
coming of Jesus Christ to this earth as man means God becoming
man.
On this note, John Piper argues that God is the gospel and states:
When I say that God Is the Gospel I mean that the highest, best,
final, decisive good of the gospel, without which no other gifts
would be good, is the glory of God in the face of Christ revealed
for our everlasting enjoyment. The saving love of God is God’s
commitment to do everything necessary to enthrall us with what
is most deeply and durably satisfying, namely himself.2

11
What else can be more important than the fact that God becomes
man so that man can get back to him through faith in him? If there
is anything that is most important to humanity, it is the gospel.
That is why valuing it is a crucial thing. Piper adds that the gospel
is the full enjoyment of God’s glory in the face of Christ. He says:

Part II:
To value the gospel means to price it above all else. This section
shows you how to go about that.
11
Chapter Three
11
anyone who needs to value the gospel to know what the gospel is.
Lack of knowledge about the gospel will hardly result to valuing
the gospel.
What one needs to know about the gospel has been highlighted in
the previous chapter. That chapter [One] is very foundational to
valuing the gospel. It is the chapter that should be read repeatedly
to ensure that one has a good grasp of the gospel.
11
The following chapter will deal with the knowledge of the gospel
that has to do with believing in him.
Note that the point here is not suggesting that knowledge of facts
about the gospel intellectually is the means to being right with
God.
The point, rather, is that you cannot believe what you do not know
or understand. At least God must reveal himself to you either
through someone or miraculously in such a way that you know
clearly that this is who he is, before you can believe in him. That
knowledge is necessary for one to come to the point of deciding to
believe in Jesus Christ as Savior.

Chapter Four
11
The special blessings of God’s kingdom are for those who become
citizens of that kingdom.

Justice, Shalom, and the Great Commision (Wheaton, Illinois: Crossway, 2011), 108.
11
In the same text, Paul uses a different phrase to say the same thing.
He says about the gospel that they received, that, “… in which you
stand…” To take one’s stand in the gospel means to believe the
gospel.
Thus, to receive the gospel and to take a stand in the gospel means
to believe the gospel. Paul uses different phrases to explain one
truth—Believe the gospel!
11
Salvation from the wrath of God comes only when one has
believed the gospel of Jesus Christ by faith. Otherwise there is no
salvation.
If you have heard the gospel preached, your value of that gospel is
revealed in your believe in it. To hear the gospel and reject it
means that value has not been placed on it. Have you any value in
the gospel?
11
Chapter Five
11
If the gospel is known and believed without its message being put
into practice, it means value has not been placed on it still. We can
only talk about practical Christianity when the gospel is practically
lived out.
The life that values the gospel by living it out is the life that
experiences the blessings of God in ways that words cannot
express.
“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy,
and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in
it, for the time is near” (Rev. 1:3).
11
In James, those who only claim that they have faith but fail to
demonstrate practically the faith they say they have in Jesus
Christ, are considered as those who have demonic or dead faith.
11
Chapter Six
11
To proclaim the gospel means to announce it. God has given that
charge to us in the Great Commission. As believers in Jesus
Christ, we have the mandate to preach the gospel. It takes the
proclamation of the gospel to have people experience the
transformation of lives as stated in Romans 12:1-2.
The world needs to hear the gospel and that can only be possible
through our proclamation of it. The world needs nothing more
than to see and hear the value of Christ in the work and words of
his God-besotted people.5
When the news of the coming of Jesus first landed on earth, the
effect was extraordinary because the news was extraordinary. One
could even say that a completely new history began with the
coming of this man Jesus Christ.6

Ibid,, 20.
11
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for
salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to
the Greek.
From the above texts, it is clear that Paul was motivated to
proclaim the gospel by the fact that, he had an obligation to preach
it and that he had no shame in preaching it.
11
On that, Piper notes, “When you receive grace from God, you
don’t become a debtor to God; you become a debtor to everyone
who like you needs grace.”7

Chapter Seven
11
11
Growth from one stage to the other is necessary for any living
thing, to ensure that it is healthy. It is the same with the Christian
life. The Bible teaches that as Christians, we need to grow in the
grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18).
11
As such, God is your Father. Now that God is your Father, you
need to talk to him, share your struggles with him, present your
needs to him, and even plead with him on behalf of other people’s
needs.
