Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Dedication

I dedicate this book to all believers in Jesus Christ, especially

those who are passionate about preaching the Gospel and doing so
with intentionality.

You are God’s channel through which he dispenses the riches of

his Word to the world. Do not take that for granted. This book will
help you do that just excellently.

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Introduction

To value means to place importance on something. For someone

to say he values fashionable things, for example, it means that he
places importance on latest or fashionable things that come up per
time.

In this book, I want to point out to you, my dear reader, the

importance of the Gospel, which is why we should value it. I am
also going to suggest some points to you on “how” one can
actually value the Gospel.

The “how to” value the Gospel which I will elaborate on in this
book is that: You value the Gospel by Knowing it; Believing it;
Living it; Proclaiming it, and Growing in it.

In life, we must have what we value. Every individual has at least

one thing or the other that s/he values over other things. The value
we place on some things over others is usually motivated by
different factors, some of which are: passion, influence from
friends or family, a burden about a particular thing, a quest to
please someone or some people, etc.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

In this book, I am arguing that if value must be placed on

something as of first importance, it should be the Gospel. This
argument is not in any way advocating that people are to value
only the Gospel exclusively, but that the value we place on other
things ought not to be equal to or greater than that which we place
on the Gospel. Thus, we must value the Gospel above all else.

At least, the Bible points out one thing about the Gospel that
should naturally be the reason why value should be placed on it
above all other things.

The Apostle Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, “…I
delivered to you as of FIRST IMPORTANCE what I also
received…” and what follows is the explanation of the Gospel
message. If the Bible places the Gospel as that which is of First
Importance, what else can we place value on above it?

One very important thing to note is that, the state of man after the
fall in Genesis 3 is the reason for the Mission of God to have the
fallen man brought back to him. At the fall, man was separated
from God.

That is the point where the gospel [good news] comes in.

The gospel is God’s means to have man come back into fellowship
with God by believing it genuinely by faith. Apart from the
gospel, there is no other way by which man can come back into
the fellowship that first existed between him and God.

Part I:

The Gospel and Its Importance

Value will always be placed on what is worth valuing by the

people who know. This section seeks to reveal the worth of the
gospel so that man sees clearly why it should be valued above
every other thing.

Chapter One

What is the Gospel?

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached

to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by
which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I
preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered
to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ
died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he
was buried, that he was raised on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.1

This text of Scripture gives us the content of the gospel. In it, Paul
points out what the gospel is and states clearly that, it is the gospel
that saves anyone who believes (cf. Rom. 1:16). He emphasizes
that the gospel he is talking about is the same gospel he also
received.

To Paul, the gospel is, and ought to be priced above any other
thing in this life. This is clear in the statement, “For I delivered to
you as of first importance …” made by Paul himself. From there,
he moves on to tell the Corinthians what the gospel is all about.
He said, “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also
received that:

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

1. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures

(15:3): The death of Jesus Christ on the cross was not because
he committed any sin or crime; it was rather because he took
our own sins upon himself. On the cross, Jesus died our death
(2 Cor. 5:21). He did this in accordance with the Scriptures.
This has to do with the Old Testament prophecies about the
coming of Jesus Christ (cf. Is. 53).

2. That he was buried (15:4): The burial of Jesus Christ is an

indication that he actually died. In all normal circumstances,
we bury only people who have died. Jesus died, and so was
buried.

3. That he was raised on the third day (15:4): God raised Jesus
Christ from the dead to give us hope if we believe in him. All
those who believe in Jesus Christ have the hope of eternal life
of joy and peace in God’s Kingdom. In this same text of
Scripture, we have the living proofs of the fact that Jesus
Christ is alive even right now (15:5-6).

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Thus, the gospel message is about the death of Jesus Christ, his
burial, and his resurrection for our sake, so that if one puts his trust
in him, he will be saved from eternal condemnation brought by
sin, and be given that life of joy and fulfillment.

The power of the gospel is in the empty cross and the empty tomb
(grave)! The Jesus Christ that Paul presents in this text died and
rose again to life. He is alive, and that is the victory we have as
believers in him (1 Cor. 15:57).

Chapter Two

How Important Is The Gospel?

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

The importance of the Gospel cannot be over emphasized. Paul

classifies the gospel among all other things as what is of first
importance (1 Cor. 15:1-4). Many factors account for placing the
gospel in the category that Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit, places it.

The gospel saves man from the wrath of God. The gospel nurtures
believers unto Christian maturity. The gospel brings about the
peace that only Jesus gives. Etc. What only the gospel can do as
the ones highlighted above, nothing else can do it.

Some people believe that through their efforts they can be made
right with God. For example, some think that if they can give
much money to the church, they will be saved; if they can help the
poor irrespective of whether they go to church or not, they will
have a secured place in God’s kingdom; etc. Those are thoughts
provoked by ignorance of the truth.

The importance of the gospel is rooted in the content of the gospel.

Jesus Christ is the content of the gospel. Everything about Jesus

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Christ is about the gospel. The gospel has to do with the coming of
Jesus Christ to earth. This is not just an ordinary thing because the
coming of Jesus Christ to this earth as man means God becoming
man.

Do you know what it means for GOD [THE LORD himself] to

become man? This speaks about the King of kings becoming man
[Jesus Christ], like you and me, in order that man might be drawn
back to him [God] through him [Jesus Christ] based on his faith in
him [Jesus Christ]. That is how important the gospel is.

On this note, John Piper argues that God is the gospel and states:

When I say that God Is the Gospel I mean that the highest, best,
final, decisive good of the gospel, without which no other gifts
would be good, is the glory of God in the face of Christ revealed
for our everlasting enjoyment. The saving love of God is God’s
commitment to do everything necessary to enthrall us with what
is most deeply and durably satisfying, namely himself.2

2
John Piper, God is the Godpel (Wheaton, Illinois: Crossway Books, 2005), 13.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

What else can be more important than the fact that God becomes
man so that man can get back to him through faith in him? If there
is anything that is most important to humanity, it is the gospel.

That is why valuing it is a crucial thing. Piper adds that the gospel
is the full enjoyment of God’s glory in the face of Christ. He says:

That this enjoyment had to be purchased for sinners at the cost of

Christ’s life makes his glory shine all the more brightly. And that
this enjoyment is a free and unmerited gift makes it shine more
brightly still. But the price Jesus paid for the gift and the
unmerited freedom of the gift are not the gift. The gift is Christ
himself as the glorious image of God—seen and savored with
everlasting joy.3

Those words spell out clearly the importance of the gospel.

It is on the basis of the importance of the gospel that I opine that

value should be placed on it above all else.

Part II:

How do we Value the Gospel?

To value the gospel means to price it above all else. This section
shows you how to go about that.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Chapter Three

We Value the Gospel by Knowing it

It is difficult to value what you are ignorant about. Knowledge of

something is paramount to valuing it. It is indispensable for

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

anyone who needs to value the gospel to know what the gospel is.
Lack of knowledge about the gospel will hardly result to valuing
the gospel.

What one needs to know about the gospel has been highlighted in
the previous chapter. That chapter [One] is very foundational to
valuing the gospel. It is the chapter that should be read repeatedly
to ensure that one has a good grasp of the gospel.

One needs to be able to have a mastery of the gospel in such a way

that at any moment, if one is asked to state what it is, it should not
be a toil. The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ came and
died in our place, in order that if one believes in him, he will not
perish but have eternal life (cf. John 3:16; 10:10; Rom. 10:9).

To know the gospel means to know Jesus Christ. There are

contexts in the Bible where to know Jesus Christ means to believe
in him e.g. John 8:32. But knowledge of the gospel in the context
of this chapter has to do with knowing the facts of the gospel.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

The following chapter will deal with the knowledge of the gospel
that has to do with believing in him.

The knowledge of the gospel in the context of this chapter is one

that comes with intellectual ascent. For one to value the gospel, he
needs to know the facts surrounding Jesus Christ as the Messiah
and the Son of God.

This knowledge is very important as one is expected, as a believer,

to give a response to whoever asks about the hope that we have
(cf. 1 Pet. 3:15).

Note that the point here is not suggesting that knowledge of facts
about the gospel intellectually is the means to being right with
God.

The point, rather, is that you cannot believe what you do not know
or understand. At least God must reveal himself to you either
through someone or miraculously in such a way that you know
clearly that this is who he is, before you can believe in him. That
knowledge is necessary for one to come to the point of deciding to
believe in Jesus Christ as Savior.

To intentionally grow in that knowledge (2 Pet. 3:18) is crucial to

valuing the gospel.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Chapter Four

We Value the Gospel by Believing it

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

It is not enough to know the gospel cognitively, to be able to value

it as one ought to. Knowledge of the gospel is important, but if it
is not believed, then value has not been placed on it as it is
expected.

To believe the gospel is not a scholarly claim of the knowledge of

the facts of the gospel. It includes complete trust in Christ as Lord
and Savior from sin. This belief results in receiving a new birth
that produces a change in heart, and results in obeying the Lord
wholeheartedly.

Christ suffered and died, was buried, and was resurrected in

accordance with the Scriptures so that by believing in him, one
can receive the gift of salvation (Rom. 10:9, 13) hence gaining all
the blessings of the kingdom.4

The special blessings of God’s kingdom are for those who become
citizens of that kingdom.

4
Kevin Deyoung and Greg Gilbert, What is the Mission of the Church?: Making Sense of Social
Justice, Shalom, and the Great Commision (Wheaton, Illinois: Crossway, 2011), 108.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

It is not possible to become a member of the kingdom of God if

one has not believed [placed faith] in Jesus Christ.

This is what Paul means in 1 Corinthians 15:1 when he says to the

Corinthians that they received the gospel that he preached to them.
To have heard and received the gospel means that they believed it.

In the same text, Paul uses a different phrase to say the same thing.
He says about the gospel that they received, that, “… in which you
stand…” To take one’s stand in the gospel means to believe the
gospel.

Thus, to receive the gospel and to take a stand in the gospel means
to believe the gospel. Paul uses different phrases to explain one
truth—Believe the gospel!

This emphasizes the importance of believing the gospel after

hearing it preached. Believing the gospel is the action that brings
out the fruit thereof to reality in the life of the believer.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Salvation from the wrath of God comes only when one has
believed the gospel of Jesus Christ by faith. Otherwise there is no
salvation.

If you have heard the gospel preached, your value of that gospel is
revealed in your believe in it. To hear the gospel and reject it
means that value has not been placed on it. Have you any value in
the gospel?

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Chapter Five

We Value the Gospel by Living it

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

If the gospel is known and believed without its message being put
into practice, it means value has not been placed on it still. We can
only talk about practical Christianity when the gospel is practically
lived out.

To live out the gospel of Jesus Christ means to be obedient to the

demands of the gospel. Here, I am placing the gospel message,
content wise, and the entire teachings of the Bible together as what
must be obeyed.

Obedience to the teachings of Scripture generally is a way of

living out the truth of God’s Word practically. That is how we
prove our value of the Gospel.

The life that values the gospel by living it out is the life that
experiences the blessings of God in ways that words cannot
express.

“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy,
and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in
it, for the time is near” (Rev. 1:3).

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

To keep the Word of God means to practice it. James is one of

those servants of God who was inspired to teach about practical
Christianity. We need not just to talk about our faith in Jesus
Christ, but live it out practically.

In James, those who only claim that they have faith but fail to
demonstrate practically the faith they say they have in Jesus
Christ, are considered as those who have demonic or dead faith.

As Christians who hold to the truth of Scripture, we are called

upon to practically live out that Truth.

If we must proof to the world that we are believers in Christ, and

we value the gospel that we have believed to become Christians,
then living out practically what we believe and teach is the way to
go.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Chapter Six

We Value the Gospel by Proclaiming it

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

To proclaim the gospel means to announce it. God has given that
charge to us in the Great Commission. As believers in Jesus
Christ, we have the mandate to preach the gospel. It takes the
proclamation of the gospel to have people experience the
transformation of lives as stated in Romans 12:1-2.

The world needs to hear the gospel and that can only be possible
through our proclamation of it. The world needs nothing more
than to see and hear the value of Christ in the work and words of
his God-besotted people.5

The beauty of the good news of Jesus Christ is such that as

Christians, we cannot afford to not herald it to the world, but
rather jump out of our comfort zones and rush out with it to the
streets.

When the news of the coming of Jesus first landed on earth, the
effect was extraordinary because the news was extraordinary. One
could even say that a completely new history began with the
coming of this man Jesus Christ.6

5
Piper, God is the Godpel, 17.
6
Ibid,, 20.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Our passionate proclamation of this news to the world reveals how

much we value it. If you truly value the gospel, you need to
proclaim it for the obvious result that the gospel alone can bring
about. Two things motivated Paul to be eager to preach (proclaim)
the gospel. He states in Romans 1:14-15 that:

I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to

the wise and to the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to
you also who are in Rome.

And in 1:16 that:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for
salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to
the Greek.
From the above texts, it is clear that Paul was motivated to
proclaim the gospel by the fact that, he had an obligation to preach
it and that he had no shame in preaching it.

Those two things can equally serve as our motivation for

proclaiming the gospel as those who value it. If something will not
serve as a motivating factor for our eagerness to proclaim the
gospel, we may end up just wishing that we could proclaim it and
not actually proclaiming it.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

As Christians, we are saved by God’s grace. It is that gift of grace

that should motivate us to be eager to share the same message of
grace to others who need to hear it.

On that, Piper notes, “When you receive grace from God, you
don’t become a debtor to God; you become a debtor to everyone
who like you needs grace.”7

As Christians, we are saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8-9).

As such, we are debtors to the rest of the people in the world who
need grace.

The payment of this debt is in proclaiming the gospel. That is

actually an act of valuing the gospel that I am calling on every
genuine believer in Christ to get involved in with intentionality.

7

1:8-15), 1998.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Chapter Seven

We Value the Gospel by Growing in it

“The law of influence states that, the scope of your influence is

directly proportional to the rate of your growth consistency

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

provided compassion and continues learning is kept constant”

(Mike Oladipo).

To proclaim the gospel as stated in the previous chapter is a way

of influencing the world unto God’s agenda. The capacity of your
influence will be directly proportional to your growth rate in the
gospel.

Your growth in the gospel will enable you to influence your

generation at a high rate. That growth entails consistent and
continues learning.

Growth in the gospel is not supposed to be a competition with

some other person(s). You are expected to grow in the gospel, yes,
but you have to grow at your pace and according to the grace that
God has given you.

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

We are not in a competition to see who grows faster. Nevertheless,

growth must be evidenced in the change of attitude and one’s way
of doing things.

Growth from one stage to the other is necessary for any living
thing, to ensure that it is healthy. It is the same with the Christian
life. The Bible teaches that as Christians, we need to grow in the
grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18).

To grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ means to grow in

the gospel. That is what is expected of those who have accepted
Jesus Christ and are now Christians.

A crucial question at this point is, “How do I go about this

growth?” In other words, “What does it take to grow in the grace
and the knowledge of Jesus Christ?”

In my book The Gospel, I have highlighted the following points in

more detail. They are ways by which one can get to grow in grace
and knowledge of Jesus Christ. If the points are implemented
intentionally, it will no doubt result in Christian growth. They are:

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

Prayer: Prayer in its simplest form is defined as, “communication

with God.” If you have genuinely believed in Jesus Christ by faith,
then you are a saved person.

As such, God is your Father. Now that God is your Father, you
need to talk to him, share your struggles with him, present your
needs to him, and even plead with him on behalf of other people’s
needs.

This should be a daily exercise as it nourishes your soul unto

Christian growth as one who values the gospel.

Bible Study: The Bible is the Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16). It is

through the Bible that God has spoken to humanity in these last
days (Heb. 1:1-2). Studying the Bible every day is the surest way
of gaining knowledge for spiritual growth.

Obedience: Christians are expected to obey everything that God

has stated in his Word. When believers begin to do what the Word
of God is saying, it is an indication that they are growing in Him.
To disobey the Word of God means to disobey God (1
Thessalonians 4:8).

Fellowship: In Hebrews 10:25, the Bible encourages every

Christian to not neglect fellowship with one another. When we

11

Value The Gospel

Wirsiy Kingsly M.

come together in fellowship, we encourage one another spurring

ourselves to spiritual growth.

Giving: Giving to God and to the needy is an aspect of Spiritual

Growth. The Bible says “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7),
giving us a clue on “how” Christians ought to give. Generous and
cheerful giving is an indication that spiritual growth is taking
place in the life of a Christian.

Having gone through this book, what decision are you considering
to make as far as valuing the gospel is concerned?

Are you touched by the “How To” value the gospel and are
considering to start living a life of valuing the gospel
intentionally?

The starting point is to believe it. At least you have it explained in

the first chapter of this book clearly. All you need to do is to
believe it by faith and Jesus will be your Savior.

If you have believed the gospel already and you desire to begin to
value it as outlined in this book, my prayer for you is that God will
grant you the grace that you need in order to do that effectively for
his glory.
