Korean Way of Tea

Jung Yu-Ran

Tea is drunk for its taste, but at the same time it is a healthy drink that is so beneficial to the human body that is used as
medicine. Tea is a great help in strengthening the body, the most important part of a healthy life. Not only that but the
devotion and rules of etiquette that accompany the steeping, drinking, and serving of tea, as well as the calm, quiet
atmosphere, provide an environment for gaining enlightenment.
The goal of the Way of Tea is to enhance the elegance of drinking tea and also to contribute to a healthy lifestyle. A
healthy lifestyle means maintaining a sound body and mind while elegantly pursuing the way of life. Thus, the Way of tea
encourages us to cultivate a pure spirit without malice and with an attitude of service, and through this allows us to gain
happiness.
To know the taste of tea is to know the five tastes of life: bitter, sweet, astringent, spicy, and sour. Because these five
tastes of tea are perceived with the five senses, they cause the tea drinker to think deeply about life. Tea etiquette and the
Way of Tea begin with the spirit. To live a tea lifestyle is not to increase one’s knowledge of tea, but to add to the depth of
life.
