WORKSHEETS IN THEATER ARTS G- 7

1
I. LEARNING COMPETENCY

Mounts re-enactments of cultural performances demonstrating the use

of different modes of expressions or forms
II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Re-enactments is a creative technique: Playing with the idea of

appropriation, translation, authority, signification, recirculation, artistic re-
enactment functions as a vehicle of memory and cultural transfer and
addresses an entire set of challenging issues.
Re-enactment denotes the redoing, restaging or re-performing of an
artistic performance-meaning a live act or action by a visual artist-and is as
such distinct from the repetition of a theatrical performance, choreographed
dance or scored musical performance.
The culture of the Philippines, an island country in the South-East Asia,
represents a huge range of very outstanding and fascinating traditions.
Nevertheless, for anyone who would like to discuss the issue of the Filipino
contemporary theatre, the difficult and very complicated postcolonial history
of the country appears as one of the main challenges.
Most scholars (both in the Philippines and in foreign countries), who try
to describe Philippine theatre, divide those dramas and performances into
three groups: the indigenous theatre, the theatre based/founded on Spanish
colonization, and the theatre influenced (in the 20th century) by the Americans.

Facial Expressions are used

by humans to convey various types
of meaning in various contexts. The
range of meanings spans basic
possibly innate socio-emotional
concepts such as “surprise” to
complex and culture specific
concepts such as “carelessly”. The
range of contexts in which humans
use facial expressions spans
responses to events in the
environment to particular linguistic
constructions within sign
languages.
Note: Live video showing different expressions will be given to the learners
through their parents during distribution of learning materials.

2
Humans perceive facial expressions as conveying meaning, but where do they
come from and what exactly do they mean? Based on observations of facial
expression typically associated with emotions Darwin (1904).
Hypothesized that they must have had some instrumental purpose in
evolutionary history. For example, lifting the eyebrows might have helped our
ancestors respond to unexpected environmental events by widening the visual
field and therefore enabling them to see more. Even though their instrumental
function may have been lost, the facial expression remains in humans as part
of our biological endowment and therefore we still lift our eyebrows when
something surprising happens in the environment whether seeing more is of
any value or not.

The Arts refers to the theory,

human application and physical
expression of creativity found in human
cultures and societies through skills and
imagination in order to produce objects,
environments and experiences. Major
constituents of the arts include visual
arts (including architecture, ceramics,
drawing, filmmaking, painting,
photography, and sculpting), literary
arts (including fiction, drama, poetry, and
prose), performing arts (including dance,
music, and theatre), culinary arts
(including cooking, chocolate making and
winemaking).
Some art forms combine a visual
element with performance (e.g. cinematography), or artwork with the written
word (e.g. comics). From prehistoric cave paintings to modern day films, art
serves as a vessel for storytelling and conveying humankind’s relationship
with the environment.

Note: videos of the actual footage of senakulo as sample for cultural

performance for Philippine theater will be given to learners through their parents
during distribution of learning materials or through messenger.
Senakulo- a stage or street play about the life and Passion of Jesus-
takes place in many communities, especially in Bulacan, Rizal and Pampanga
provinces. An outdoor Senakulo often parades a figure of Jesus carrying the
Cross through the streets, and emphasizes the violence and brutality of Jesus’
persecutors.

3
The bloody re-enactment at San Pedro Cutud, San Fernando, and Pampanga
is the most graphic and infamous of these plays, but the style and interpretive
message of the Senakulo varies.
