REPORT

One week Online Faculty Development Programme on “Internet of Things” sponsored by AICTE
Training and Learning (ATAL) from 13th September – 17th September , 2021 was organized by
Department of Computer Engineering J. C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA,
Faridabad. This FDP was planned to provide hands on training on various IoT modules so that
participants can learn to build their own IoT products for different application domains and to also make
participants learn real world application scenarios of IOT along with its social and economic impact
using various case studies. The FDP was attented by 170 participants of various institutions from across
the country. The FDP had 14 sessions. Major topics of the FDP were : Machine learning in IoT,
monitoring of machines using IoT, Data Management and Big data analytics in IoT, Data Visualization
through Nodered, Cloud Centric IoT, IoT based Wi-Fi Module to interface Arduino with cloud, IoT in
agriculture, Security & Privacy Issues in IoT, Challenges and Opportunities in Machine Learning on IoT
devices.

The speakers from both renowned industry and academia background shared their knowledge and
experiences with participants. Some speakers who are from academia are : Prof. Sharad Sinha, IIT Goa,
Prof. K.G. Srinivasa , NITTTR Chandigarh, Dr. Naveen, NIT Hamirpur, , Dr. Shajulin, IIIT-Kottayam,
Sh. Santosh Sam Koshy, CDAC Hydrabad, Prof. Sambhaji Sarode, MIT ADT University . Some
speakers who were from industry were : Mr. Amey Tambe, Director, SoftTech Data Securities, Mr.
Dhruv, Co-founder, Samajh AI, Mr. Pinaki Chatterjee, Manager InfoSec, Harries Corp USA.

The inauguration of the event was held on 13th September 2021, 9:30 a.m. onwards.Prof M.N Doja,
Director IIIT Sonipat was the Chief Guest of the program. It was attended by Prof. Dinesh Kumar,
Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology , Dr. Sunil Kumar Garg,
Registrar of the University, Prof Komal kumar Bhatia, Dean, Faculty of Informatics and Computing,
Deans and Chairpersons of various departments.
Prof M.N. Doja apprised the audience about the need and importance of IoT in today’s techno-driven
era. He also urged all the participants to keep themselves updated in order to keep abreast with the
latest technologies in the field.
Prof. Dinesh Kumar addressed the audience and appreciated the initiatives taken by the Department of
Computer Engineering, for their strenuous efforts in organizing this Faculty Development Programme.
He conveyed his best wishes for the successful completion of the program.
Prof. Komal Kumar Bhatia, Dean, Faculty of Informatics & Computing welcomed Prof. Dinesh Kumar,
Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, JCBoseUST, chief guest of the program Prof. M. N. Doja, Director, IIIT
Sonipat, Dr. Sunil Kumar Garg, Registrar JCBoseUST, Deans, Chairpersons of various departments and
the participants. He emphasized the significance of IoT in almost every application domain.
The Program Convener Dr. Sapna Gambhir Associate Professor, Department of Computer Engineering
discussed session titles’ details and their respective speakers. She has mentioned that objective of this
program is to bring eminent speakers from industry and academia, to enrich the participants with
preliminaries of the Internet of Things along with its various applications.
At the end, Dr. Sunil Kumar Garg, proposed the vote of thanks to all who were directly or indirectly
involved in organizing this event.

The first session of the FDP was taken up by Dr. KG Srinivasa, Professor at NITTTR, Chandigarh. The main
focus of this session was Introduction to the Internet of Things. He started with the history and definition of IoT.
He emphasized the importance of IoT in today’s life. He further discussed the increasing number of users on
Internet. He then elaborated Green Computing and Miniature of devices which are the recent trends of IoT. He
also talked about the new things to augment life like smart city, smart car, smart home, smart industries and so on.
He further discussed the role of sensors in bridging the gap. He also talked about Ambient Intelligence. The
session concluded with the discussion of various applications of IoT.

The second session was based on Architecture & Smart Sensors. Dr. K.G. Srinivasa elaborated on the
disambiguation of IoT, IoE and M2M. He further talked about Embedded Programming, Wireless Sensor
Networks (WSN) applications, IOT applications and various communication technologies such as Zigbee and
6LoWPAN (IEEE 802.15.4), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. He also discussed cloud computing, Digital Twin, Big data
analytics and applications of IoT. Dr. K.G. Srinivasa talked about IoT Reference Model analogous to OSI
reference model and discussed different layers in detail. To make the lecture more interesting, he also showed the
various videos on the significant role of IoT in smart cities, health care and agriculture sectors. He later on
explained transducers, actuators, network topologies used in WSNs, and issues and challenges in WSNs. He
winded up the session with 5G and IoT. The session concluded with a Q/A session with the queries posted by the
participants.

Mr. Suresh, Vice President of Techsys IoT labs presided over on Day 2 Session 3 and 4. He started with Arduino
by first differentiating between microprocessors and microcontrollers and discussed various boards from Micro
controllers Arduino family. He elaborated on Bluetooth module ( HC-05 ) and automation. He also discussed ESP
8266 module features and internet connectivity. He showed hardware devices and integrated chips to the
participants for better insights. He also demonstrated 100 m Bluetooth range. Participants asked queries about
cost, range, features, programming facilities, implementation about the demonstrated hardware devices. Later on,
he emphasized on the new innovation in 2020: Arduino based ventilator system, Arduino protocols and Serial
peripheral interface with its features. He winded up the session with hands on practical session and experiments.

Session 5 began with Ms. Shivi and Ms. Ayyu extending a warm welcome to the Mr. Dhruv, Co-founder, Samajh
AI. The main focus of this session was Monitoring of Machine using IoT. He started with the brief introduction
with the Internet and IoT. He emphasized the importance of IoT with a major jump in post-COVID-19 situation.
He further elaborated the driving factors of IoT, which are Sensors, Connectivity, and People and Processes. The
session was very interesting with his interactive slides, where he asked several questions from the participants. He
illustrated the machine monitoring conditions in past, present and future with different practical examples.
Moving on further, he discussed different techniques for machine monitoring. He also talked about steps for
building a condition monitoring system. He further discussed the benefits of AI enabled data. The session
concluded with the future trends in machine monitoring systems. With a few queries from students and the
teachers the session came to an end.

The sixth Stress management session was presided by expert speaker Ms. Yashavi Kuchhal. This session was
based on the 9 rituals for stress management and a healthy lifestyle. She tells us how to live a balanced and happy
life. She also teaches us 9 rituals of stress management techniques (journal is healing) through which one can
reduce stress in their lives. One can change their situation or their reaction to it. We can try by altering the
situation. If not, we can change our attitudes towards it. She focused on the rituals that were followed by our
ancestors but now, people forgot these rituals in their busy lifestyles. She tells us the importance of a balanced
diet, sound sleep, exercise, opposite thinking, water therapy, listening to music, and many more. To make the
lecture more interactive, the participant’s video is on throughout the session and all the faculty members actively
participated and appreciated the efforts of the speaker. The session was very motivating and encouraged all the
faculty members to overcome their stress so that the stress should not be an obstacle in their lives. The session
concluded with a Q/A session with the queries posted by the participants.

Ms. Shilpi and Ms. Raveena extended a warm welcome to all the participants and the expert Mr. Parvez, IoT
consultant in Soft Tech Data securities on Day 3 Session 7. He discussed Raspberry Pi, its history, hardware
specifications. He interactively presented practical demonstration on connection and installation with Raspberry
pi. He further discussed applications of Raspberry Pi by showing live examples, showed settings and drive
connections to Raspberry Pi. Session was very interesting as he demonstrated live applications on the projects
currently build in like controlling LED, lights, Fan with Raspberry Pi. He winded up the session by handling
participants queries very well.

Dr. Naveen Chauhan, Associate professor in NIT Hamirpur was the expert speaker in session 8. The main focus
of the session was Data Management and Data Analytics in IoT. He introduced the various building blocks of IoT
including identification, sensing, communication, computing, services and semantics which will help in extracting
the data from various ways.. He furthur discussed the major components of IoT. He elaborated the three layered
architecture and service oriented architecture of IoT. He also explained the present scenario and movement of IoT
in future direction as how it move from RFID to teleoperation. He explained a very statement that “people
connected to things and things connected to other things and everything connected to internet”. He introduced the
basic concept of Big Data along with its intersection with IoT and AI in IoT. The session concluded with some
trends in IoT along with value proposition and current critical aspects of Big Data Technologies and different Use
Cases on Automobile IoT, Port IoT.

The expert speaker for the session9 was Mr. Amey Tambe, Director, SoftTech data securities. In this session, he
talked about various data visualization techniques using NodeRed. He started the discussion by explaining IOT
device architecture in detail. After this, he demonstrated various developer nodes and sensors such as ultrasonic
sensors. He showed various types of sensors simultaneously briefed their configurations, ports, and other specific
details. These details will be helpful for the participants in starting mini-projects and it will give a good head-start
to begin delving into the topic. Thereafter, he explained Node-Red, which is a powerful programming tool for
wiring together hardware devices. He demonstrated various configurations and setups. It was a very insightful
session. This interactive and informative session was followed by an active discussion where participants posted
their queries in the chat box and the expert speaker very well answered them. With a warm vote of thanks, the
session came to an end.

Tenth technical session was presided expert speaker Dr. Shahujlin Benedict. This session was based on the
cloud centric IOT, use of cloud centric IOT, pick up the speed in latest communication with embedded sensors.
Dr. shahjilin was emphasized on how mobile devices utilize GPS for localization, sensing by turning off the
GPS, energy saving. Dr. shahjulin was also discussed how cloud plays an important role for implementation of
smart cities, scalability of cloud, security of cloud. Applications and challenges were also discussed by the shajulin
sir for effective implementation of cloud centric iot. All the faculty members actively participated and appreciated the
efforts of the speaker. The session was very motivating and encouraged all the faculty members towards in the field of
IOT. The session concluded with a Q/A session with the queries posted by the participants.

The 12th session started with a warm welcome of Sh. Santosh Sam Koshy, who is designated as Joint Director,
and has been associated with C-DAC by Ms. Monika and Ms. Ayyu. He started with the focus areas at C-DAC
Hyderabad including Profession Electronics, Software Technologies, Cyber Security and Education & Training.
Interventions of technology in agriculture like cattle monitoring and management with the help of sensors
attached to the animals , weather forecasting, robotics and farm machinery, drones as sprinklers for irrigation,
pesticide and nutrients, genetically modified crops, etc. were made familiar. He explained yield forecasting ,
crop/soil health mapping, farm weather monitoring, early detection of plant disease and livestock & Fisheries
health monitoring as the potential applications in agriculture where technology can improve productivity. He
further added the technologies implemented by C-DAC like WSN Gateway. He concluded with the challenges
faced in the field of agriculture.

In the 13th Session, Ms. Shivi Along with Ms. Shilpi introduced Mr. Pinaki Chatterjee, Manager InfoSec, Harries
Corp USA. In this session he talked about Security & Privacy Issues in IoT. To understand the security in IoT, he
first explained the different components of IoT. He talked about the information that hacker can obtain from IoT
devices. He further elaborated on the different security vulnerabilities. He, then, discussed IoT security and
privacy requirements defined by ITU-T. He also briefed the participants with the IoT security framework. He also
focused on Device malfunctioning and what measures can be taken to prevent it. He discussed various security
tools used in IoT. With a few queries from students and the teachers the session came to an end.

In the 14 Session, Ms. Shilpi along with Ms. Raveena welcomed the expert for the session Mr. Dhruv Singh, Co-
th

Founder, Samajh AI. In this session, he firstly recapped about the machine monitoring using IoT. Then, he
interactively started with basic criterias of AI, IoT and their applications. He furthur took all to the tour of age of
AI discussing Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. He gathered participants interest on
the importance of AI in today’s era and elaborated on the building blocks of AI. Participants raised queries on the
use cases that he discussed and steps to build AI . He also focused on pre and post activity of building AI. He
talked about the AIoT , its applications and use cases. He winded up the session on challenges and opportunities
in Machine learning in IoT by handling the queries from the participants.

The event ended with a vote of thanks from the Convenor of the program Dr. Sapna Gambhir. She expressed her
gratitude towards all the experts from academia and industry for providing their valuable time and sharing their
knowledge and extended her best wishes to the organizers and the participants for the fruitful completion of this
course.
