TOPIC A
In representation of the office holder Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the delegation of Germany is pleased to participate where we
will address: “Strategies and planification to reduce forced labor in the fast fashion industry”. A topic that is relevant

worldwide due to the nature in which the fast fashion industries are taking advantage of human beings

Countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam depend of the textile industry to keep their economies aboard, brands know this

and they take advantage threatening to leave, suppliers have to cut costs, so workers end up with poor working conditions,

poor payment and even child labour due to their economic necessities.

Current problem is that garment workers are required to work more than 12 hours a day, in dangerous working places, for the

lowest wages in the world. In 2013 Bangladesh, Rana Plaza factory collapsed, killing 1,132 workers and injuring 2500.

Germany has ratified the Protocol of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention, and also the number of fair-fashion label German

brands has been increasing. Another contribution is the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, in effect January 1, 2023,

were companies must take responsibility for all their supply chain partners — from suppliers of components to the businesses

that further process or sell the products manufactured

Germany is committed to work out a solution and encourages all of the present nations to find strategies in order to make the

problem as small as possible. The German delegation considers that the most effective strategies other than sanctions, are the

ones where the money is put in the hands of the women as the UNDP said, referring to the fact that 1 out of 6 garment workers

are women. This will make better work opportunities rather than and will make more competitiveness in the work space

around the textile industry.
