CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Clinical depression, also known as major depressive disorder, affects how you feel, think, and
behave and can cause a number of emotional and physical issues. Symptoms of depression are characterized by
reduced self-esteem, apathy and anhedonia, while anxiety is characterized by acceleration and anticipation of
future events; stress is associated with situations in which symptoms of excitement and/or tension persist as a
result of the individual’s inability to use coping strategies. It is also recognized that anxiety and stress are
natural and biological phenomena that can be more severe when the time and intensity of their manifestations
exceed the physiological limit of the individual. Mental diseases, especially mood disorders like despair and
anxiety, can be impacted by physical issues (Scott et al., 2007). According to research, 75% of mental
problems manifest themselves for the first time in young individuals. The stress of life's demands and
community pressures during this time might be detrimental to one's mental health (Othman et al., 2019).
Anxiety and sadness can be brought on by stress (Phillips et al., 2015). It's crucial to handle mental illnesses
appropriately since untreated mental illnesses can lead to substance abuse and suicide (Mahmoud et al.,
2012).Scientific evidence has revealed that health professionals are prone to developing suffering and
psychological disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression and burnout syndromes due to the characteristics of
their daily work, mainly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, high levels of exhaustion, irritability and
insomnia, reduced empathy, a decline in cognitive functions and work performance, decreased appetite or
indigestion, nervousness, frequent crying, and suicidal thoughts have been observed.
Since the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, there
has been increased concern regarding the mental health of hospital personnel. According to a study conducted
in China, the quick increase in COVID-19 cases, the excessive workload, and the depletion of equipment were
the main reasons for psychological stress among the country's health care professionals (HCW). Higher levels
of anxiety, fear, and despair were observed in the medical staff in a different study that divided hospital workers
into administrative and medical staff that is also observed in the community of Magallanes, Cavite. A prolonged
sense of sadness and loss of interest are symptoms of depression, a mood illness.
Due to a lack of expertise, organizational issues, and a lack of social support at work, health care
personnel may experience occupational stress. Distress, burnout, psychosomatic issues, and a decline in living
quality and service delivery could result from this. Depression is a severe mood disorder that impairs our
cognitive abilities. As a result, the researchers came up with this study to help the community know that it is
important to understand the causes and consequences of this severe mental illness. This study will be conducted
to find out the factors that caused anxiety and depression to health workers in Magallanes, Cavite.
