I strongly believe that music is the most important and underappreciated subject in

schools. Music class gives a safe space for so many misunderstood students, that without it they

would have no place to turn to. Keeping that in mind when choosing to become a music educator

is so important. I know from my experiences as a K-12 student, it takes a special person to be a

music educator and I believe I have the motivation, desire, and skills to be that person for my

future students.

The music I share with my students I think is equally important as the environment I

cultivate in my classroom. You can learn so much through different types of music. You can

learn about different cultures, different religions, different regions, and people who are

considered different through their music. It can teach students they are not alone in how they are

feeling if they hear the right song. It can make them feel safe and feel seen. That is so important.

Students need to feel seen as how they are and a music classroom is the best place for that. Music

can take students out of the box people often place them in and give them the freedom to explore

life through different mediums.

Starting students in music classes at a young age is also so important. Music classes

accelerate brain development in young children, particularly in the areas of the brain that are

responsible for processing sound, language development, speech perception and reading skills

(Music). So not only is it great for their creative outlet, it actually helps them function as humans

faster. Getting students involved in creating music at a young age is so important to me and that

is why I plan on being an elementary school music teacher. That is where the foundation forms.

Where music class, playing instruments and singing is not seen as a bulliable offense. Too often

students are bullied out of their love of music because it is not seen as ‘cool’ by their peers on the

sports teams. I think instilling a mindset that music is in fact cool at a young age, in all students
can possibly affect how music is seen in the latter half of their K-12 careers. It is important to

make sure that the students know they matter above all else.
