Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon is
led away from court in handcuffs on September 8. Bannon,
68, was indicted on New York State charges of money
laundering, conspiracy and fraud relating to his role in a
fundraising scheme to construct the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
Bannon pleaded not guilty. In January 2021, he received
a presidential pardon from Donald Trump, expunging
the federal charges he faced relating to the case. That
pardon doesn’t apply to state-level prosecutions.

More than two-and-a-half years after COVID-19 first appeared, the world seems to have unofficially declared
the pandemic over and done. It isn’t yet, but with vaccines, antiviral medications and modern medicine, we
can resume living our lives. Nevertheless, the effects of COVID will be felt on modern society long after the last

the monarchy to survive it has to modernize, and
of course this is the moment to do that,” Ingrid
Seward, longtime editor of Majesty magazine and
a royal biographer, told Newsweek.
The Queen’s death came at an already fraught
moment for the U.K. The country faces a hard win-
ter with the highest inflation rate in decades and
fears of spiking energy costs. Brexit is unfinished
and the Ukraine war is an increasing concern across
Europe. And the government has a very new leader:
Liz Truss’ meeting with the Queen at Balmoral was
her first as prime minister and Elizabeth’s last act
as sovereign. Now it’s up to Charles to convey stabil-
ity and continuity to a rattled nation and a restive
Commonwealth. One advantage: Like his mother,
he is said to have an impressive work ethic. Camilla
has joked ruefully about his daunting schedule.
Queen Elizabeth’s popularity rested in part on
her silence. Her subjects knew she liked dogs and
horses and that she was rarely without a black
Launer handbag, but her personal views remain a
mystery. Charles, by contrast, has been criticized for
his “black spider memos”—a reference to his inky
handwriting—chiding government leaders on is-
sues from hospital food to fox hunting. In keeping
his pledge to follow constitutional precedent, the

Rethink Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s transformation in recent decades has been tremendous. But many people’s ideas
about the country remain firmly stuck in the past. As clichés abound, it’s time for a refresher on
the current realities of the flourishing Southeast Asian nation.
Bangladesh is plagued by
deadly natural disasters N OT REALLY. Although Bangladesh is prone to floods and cyclones, the country is
highlighted as a trailblazer in terms of disaster risk reduction. While the popula-
tion has tripled in less than six decades and most people still live in risk areas, deaths
from natural disasters have plummeted.
As many as 500,000 died in the 1970 Bhola Cyclone, but the comparable 2020 Amphan
Cyclone saw a death toll of 26, according to the Red Cross. How? With a multi-layered
early warning system, modern forecasting, more than 5,500 multipurpose cyclone shel-
ters and a massive volunteer network. For the past five years, 8.8% of the national bud-
