1. Write a sentence of at least 10 words that shows strong use of alliteration. (5 points)

The Sun shined creating sunshine over the shelter. She happily helped the homeless however
she could.

2. Read the following stanza:

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

What is the rhyme scheme of the stanza? Explain how you know. (5 points)

As we noticed the above poem and how it has been written. The rhyme scheme of the stanza is
ABABCC.

3. What is an iamb and what is a trochee? Write at least one line in iambic feet and one line in

trochaic feet. (The meter does not have to be perfect, but it should be close.) (5 points)

An iamb is when there is an unstressed syllable and right after there is a stressed syllable.

Example: re (turn)

A trochee is the other way around, meaning, a stressed syllable that is followed next to an
unstressed syllable

Example: highway
4. How do poets use line breaks to emphasize the elements in their poems? Give at least three

reasons a poem might break a line. (5 points)

Inserting more space in the poem makes the audience want more. To get a sense of more
speed and more control to continue reading their poem. Separating it and making an impact
from the other poems and literature that exists.

1. a) How does sound contribute to the effect of a poem? Give at least one example. (5 points)

Using sound can contribute in many ways to a poet’s poem but mostly to create an effect. A
great example is the poem “Humpty Dumpty”.
b) Marianne Moore said, “In a poem, the words should be as pleasing to the ear as the meaning

to the mind.” Do you agree or disagree? Explain your opinion. (5 points)

I agree with Moore. She is indicating in other words poetry should be more about intelligence
other than the imagination a poet might have.

2. a) Why might some rhymes seem cliché to a reader? Give an example. (5 points)

A cliche is a phrase or a certain word that has been used in repetition or is used commonly. An
example might be “A perfect storm”

b) What is the difference between perfect rhyme and slant rhyme? How are their effects

different? (5 points)
A perfect rhyme has a repetition in the consonant and it is added later on with a vowel or
consonant. On the other hand, a slant rhyme is when there is only a repetition with a consonant
and it is not added with either a vowel or a consonant.

3. a) What effect does meter have on a poem? (5 points)

One main effect a meter has on a specific poem or in general is to be steady. It has an ongoing
flow and it has not changed drastically. A pattern.

b) Why might a poet choose to use a strict meter and then vary from it occasionally? (5 points)

It adds tension and keeps the audience and reader ingrained and fascinated to read more into
the poem. It adds diversity and while respecting the strict meter they think more about what
their audience might prefer.
