YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Dog Park

You are helping to plan a new dog park on a lot. Which lot did you choose? (Circle One)

Lot A Lot B Lot C

With the lot you have chosen, your goal is to construct the largest possible dog park that meets

the code restrictions.

Making Sense of the Problem

What do you know about

the lot size and code It has to be 250 ft wide and 275 ft long. There has to be a 4ft
requirements? sidewalk. 20 ft wide for the parking lot. The 15ft creek that is
on the side of the map indicates we cannot build either a
sidewalk or anything in that area. The design of the dog park
had to be a parallelogram.

What do you want to find The overall area of the park and build on it.
out?
What kind of answer do A number for both the width and the length. Both have to be
you expect? in ft and the number for the area in square ft.

Below is a map of the town:

1. Look at the theater on First Ave, between Alder and Birch. If the corners of the theater are all

right angles, is the theater a parallelogram? Why or why not? (2 points)

The theater in First Ave is indeed a parallelogram. This is because the interior angle is
congruent, another aspect is that the shape of the theater is a rectangle all sides are equal
meaning it is also a parallelogram.
2. Look at the school on Second Ave, between Dogwood and Elm.

a) Is the school a quadrilateral? Why or why not? (1 point)

the school is a quadrilateral because of its 4 sides in the above map diagram.

b) Is the school a parallelogram? Why or why not? (1 point)

The school is only a quadrilateral, meaning it is not a parallelogram because the opposite sides
of the diagram states they are not congruent.

Planning your dog park:

3. Draw a picture that represents what you know about the empty lot. (2 points)

4. Is the empty lot a parallelogram? Why or why not? (2 points)

The empty lot is considered a parallelogram because they are congruent with their opposite
sides meaning they are equal.

5. Where are you going to put the parking lot? Draw the parking lot on your map and label its

dimensions. (2 points)

The parking lot will be on the side of the street “Cherry St”

6. Is your parking lot a parallelogram? (2 points)

In the diagram shown above, we can witness that the parking lot is indeed a parallelogram
because the opposite sides are equal which means they are congruent.
7. Draw in the dimensions of the zone restricted by the creek or trees. (1 point)

Solving the Problem:

9. What are the final dimensions of the largest dog park you can create on your lot (not including

the sidewalk or the parking lot)? Use the Quadrilateral Tool located in the activity to help you. (2

points)
Length: 275−15−20−8=232 ft

Width: 250−8=242 ft

10. Most importantly, to satisfy the mayor, is this space a parallelogram? Why or why not? (1

point)

Yes, the mayor will be satisfied because the diagram above which shows in detail the
dimensions of the dog park will be considered a parallelogram seeing as the opposite sides are
in fact congruent, and equal.

11. Draw a sketch of your dog park. Correctly label the dimensions that prove your dog park is a

parallelogram. (2 points)
