GOOD THING TO REALIZE: You are often being asked to think “abstractly”, which means
thinking about general concepts (like relations and functions) without thinking about the
specific application of those concepts.
a) The first components of the ordered pairs are called the input values. The set of all of the
first components is called the domain of the relation.
b) The second components of the ordered pairs are called the output values. The set of all
of the second components is called the range of the relation.
c) A function is a relation where each Independent value is paired with exactly one
Dependent value.
2. Answer the following questions about the relation { (1,3), (2,4), (5,3) }.
3. Answer the following questions about the relation { (1,3), (2,4), (1,5 }.
a) What is the domain of the relation? (1,2,) (Use the { } symbols correctly.)
b) What is the range of the relation?(3,4,5) (Use the { } symbols correctly.)
c) Is the relation a function? No. Because 1 has multiple outputs.
NOTE: The following questions are to see if you understand y=f(x) notation and how to
use it in conjunction with equations, tables and graphs.
b) What is the output value for the function f when the input value is 10? (Again, try not to
use a calculator for this one.) 3(10)+4=34
x 0 8 4 5
f(x) 8 5 0 8
a) Evaluate f(8) = 5
b) According to the table, what is the domain of f ? (0,8,4,5) (Use the { } symbols
appropriately.)
c) For what value(s) of the variable x is f(x) = 8? 0,5
d) Evaluate f(5).= 8
e) Solve f(x) = 8
a) Evaluate/estimate f(2) = -1
b) Solve f(x) = 2? -1
c) Evaluate/estimate f(3.5). -2.5
NOTE: The following questions are to see if you can take the abstract ideas about a
function and apply them to a specific real-world situation.
8. Let f(t) represent the number of deer on some island t years after 1995.
a) How would you interpret f(5) = 4 ? (HINT: It tells you how many deer are on the island
during some year.)After five years there were four deer’s
b) How would you interpret f(12) = 7.5? After twelve years there were 7.5 deer’s
c) How would you interpret f(-5) = 2? Five years ago there were two deer’s.
9. Let g(x) represent the cost (in dollars) of buying x pounds of bananas.
a) Are the input values for this function “pounds of bananas” or “the cost (in dollars)”? The
pounds of bananas
b) If I evaluated g(20) would that tell me
i) How much it would cost to buy 20 pounds of bananas, or
ii) How many pounds of bananas I could buy for $20?
Answer: How many pounds of bananas I could buy for $20
10. Suppose that a store sells fabric by the yard, and that the function
p(x) = 40x + 10 gives the cost (in dollars) of buying x yards of a very fancy fabric.
For the following: round to 1 decimal place if necessary. State units.
a) How much would it cost to buy 20 yards of that fancy fabric? P(20)= 40(20)+10=8.10
b) How much fabric can you buy for $275
275=40x +10
265=40x= 6.62
