MA1521 Calculus for Computing Tutorial 0

We will discuss the solutions of Tutorial 0 in Luminus’ forum. Solutions

from Tutorial 1 onwards will be discussed during your tutorial lessons.
1. Find the domain and range of the following functions:

(a) f (x) = 1 − x,
1
(b) f (x) = √ .
1+ x
2. Specify the intervals over which the function is increasing and the inter-
vals where it is decreasing. (Graph the function before you determine the
intervals.)
1
(a) f (x) = − 2 ,
x

(b) f (x) = −4 x.
3. For each of the following functions, say whether the function is even, odd
or neither. Give reasons for your answer.
(a) f (x) = x−5 ,

(b) f (x) = 2|x| + 1.

4. (a) If g(x) = x + 2 and f (x) = 3x, determine (f ◦ g)(x).
1
(b) If (f ◦ g)(x) = x and g(x) = , determine f (x).
x
5. For each of the following function f (x), find f −1 (x) and identify the
domain and range of f −1 (x).
(a) f (x) = x3 + 1,
x 7
(b) f (x) = − .

6. Let f (x) = mx + b, m 6= 0.
(a) Show that f is a one to one function.
Hint: To show that f (x) is one to one, first suppose that f (x1 ) =
f (x2 ). Use this relation to conclude that x1 = x2 .
(b) Find a formula for the inverse of f . How are the slopes of the graphs
of f and f −1 related?
7. (a) Let F (x) be a function with domain R. Show that there exists an
even function E(x) and an odd function O(x) such that F (x) =
E(x) + O(x).
(b) Show that if F (x) = E1 (x) + O1 (x) where E1 (x) is even and O1 (x) is
odd, then E1 (x) = E(x) and O1 (x) = O(x).
