FUNCTIONS

Activity: Group Drill

• Function: (Oh Yes!) • Not Function: (Oh
No!)
1. {(-2,3),(2,3),(-3,3)} Oh Yes!

2. {(3,3),(2,2),(4,4)} Oh Yes!

3. {(1,8),(1,5),(1,3)} Oh No!

4. {(7,3),(8,3),(5,3)} Oh Yes!
Is it a function or not?

1.A jeepney and its plate number

Oh Yes! It is a function.
2. A student and his ID number
Oh Yes! It is a function.
3. A celebrity and his fans
Oh No! It is not a function.
What is a
function?
Definition of a Function:

• It is a relation define as a set of ordered

pairs (x, y) where each element of the
domain corresponds to exactly one
element of the range.
• Every value of x corresponds to a unique
value of y
Imagine you are a
vending machine, how
will you know an
output from a certain
input?
Meat-A-Morphosis
Activity:
1. In a group, write down at
least 3 examples of
functions or functions
works.
2. Present your output.
What have you observed in
the examples?
Does each machine release the
same output?
How did the output come out?
Relationship Between the Independent
and Dependent Variables

Input Process Output

(value (equati (value
of x) on rule) of y)
Examples:

1. Find the value of y in the equation

y = 10x – 3 if x = - 5.
Answer
y = 10x – 3 if x = - 5
y = 10(-5) – 3
= -50 – 3
= -53
Examples:

2. Find the value of x if the value of y

in the equation is 2.
Examples:

2
2(x – 2) = 3x + 8
2x – 4 = 3x + 8
3x – 2x = -4 - 8
x = -12
Objective of the day:

EVALUATING FUNCTIONS
Evaluating Functions
a

• It is the process of determining the

value of the function at the number
assigned to a given variable.
How do we evaluate
function?
Example:
Let . Find the following values of the
function
a. f (2)
b. f (-1)
c. f (0)
Example:

a. f(2)

=4–8+4
= 0
Example:

b. f(-1)

=1+4+4
= 9
Example:

c. f(0)

=0–0+4
= 4
How to evaluate
function?
substitute the value of x
to find the value of the
function
Law of Substitution
Evaluate the function by group. Use cartolina
upon presentation of output.
A.
1. f(2) = 2x – 5
2. f(-4) = x + 4

3. f(1) = x – 2
B. In the given function

4. f(-2)
5. f(1)
6. f(0)
7. f(3)
A.
1. f(2) = 2x – 5 3.
f(2) = 2(2) – 5
=4–5 = 2(9) + 3 + 3
= -1 = 18 + 6
2. f(-4) = x + 4 f(-3) = 24
f(-4) = (-4) + 4
=0
4. f(1) = x – 2
= (1) – 2
= -1
B.

= 4(-8) – (-4 ) – 5
= - 32 + 4 – 5
= -33
2.
= 4(1) – (2 ) – 5
=4–2–5
= -7
B.

3.
= 4(0) – (0 ) – 5
=0+0–5
= -5
4.
= 4(27) – (6 ) – 5
= 108 – 6 – 5
= 97
Solve individually. Use ½ crosswise.
In the given f(x) = 2x – 3,
find:
1.f(-5)
2.f(2)
3.f(10)
f(x) = 2x – 3
1. f(-5) = 2(-5) – 3
= -10 – 3
= -13
2. f(2) = 2(2) – 3
=4–3
=1
3. f(10) = 2(10) – 3
= 20 – 3
= 17
ASSIGNMENT
• Research the following. Use ½ crosswise.
1. Variable
2. Constant
3. Exponent
4. Radical Sign
5. Radicands
