FUNCTIONS
It is a relation such that each element of the domain is paired
with exactly one element of the range. An equivalent
definition is, a function is a relation in which no two ordered
pairs have the same first coordinate.
Functional Notation y = f(x) - where f indicates that a function
exists between variables a and y.
Evaluating Functions
Evaluating Functions
Example: When f(x) = 2x-3, find f(2)
Solution: f(2) = 2(2) - 3
=4-3
=1
Evaluating Functions
a.(f + g)(x)
= f(x) + g(x)
= 8-3x + 5 – x
= 8+5 -3x + (-x)
= 13 – 4x
EXAMPLE
b. (f - g)(x)
= f(x) - g(x)
= 8-3x - 5 – x
= 8-5 -3x-(-x)
= 3-3x + x
= 3 – 2x
EXAMPLE
c. (fg)(x)
= f(x) g(x)
= (8-3x) ( 5 – x)
= 40-8x-15x + 3x2
= 40 – 23x + 3x2
EXAMPLE
d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x)/g(x)
= (8-3x) /( 5 – x)
= 8-3x/5-x
EXAMPLE
Let f(x) = x/x+1 and g(x) = 3x/x2 -1 perform each indicated operation
and its domain
a. (f+g)(x) b. (f-g)(x)
Let f(x) = x/x+1 and g(x) = 3x/x2 -1 perform each indicated operation
and its domain
a. (f+g)(x) b. (f-g)(x)
Let f(x) = 3/ x+3 and g(x) = 1/x ,perform each indicated operation
and its domain
a. (fg)(x) b. (f/g)(x)
Let f(x) = 3/ x+3 and g(x) = 1/x ,perform each indicated operation
and its domain
