FUNCTION NOTATION
The most popular function notation is f(x) which is
read as “f of x”. This is NOT multiplication “f
times x”. Another way of writing f(x) is we can also
use g(x), h(x), and other letter.

Example :
f(x) = 2x+1 or y = 2x+1 ; where f(x) is the input
and 2x+1 is the output.
Evaluating a Function means
replacing the variable in the function,
in this case x, with a value from the
function’s domain and computing for
the result. To denote that we are
evaluating f at a for some a in the
domain of f, we write f(a).
Example
If 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 + 8, evaluate each.

a. f(4) b. f(-2)
𝑓 4 =x+8 𝑓 −2 = x + 8
𝑓 4 =4+8 𝑓 −2 = −2 + 8
𝒇 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟐 𝒇 −𝟐 = 𝟔
Example
Let f(x) = 4𝑥 − 3.Find the following values
of the function.
1. f(3) = 4(3) - 3
f(3) = 12-3
f(3) = 9
2. f(4) = 4(-4) - 3
f(4) = -16-3
f(4) = -19
Example
Let f(x) = 2𝑥 + 3.Find the following
values of the function.
1. f(5) = 2(5) + 3
f(5) = 10+3
f(5) = 13
2. f(3) = 2(-3) + 3
f(-3) = -6+3
f(-3) = -3
Example
Let f(x) = 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 8.Find the following values
of the function.
1. f(2) = (2)2 + 4(2)+8

f(2) = 4+8+8
f(2) = 20
2. f(-4) = (−4) +
2 4(-4)+8
f(-4) = 16+ (-16)+8
f(-4) = 8
Example
4𝑥+8
Let f(x) = Find the following values of the function.
2𝑥−4

4 0 +8 8
1. f(0) =
2 0 −4
= = -2
−4

2. f(3) =
4 3 +8
=
20
= 10
2 3 −4 2
Example
Find f(6) and f(7) if f(x) = 3𝑥 − 2.

1. f(6) = 3(6) − 2
f(6) = 18 − 2
f(6) = 16
f(6) = ±𝟒
Example
Find f(6) and f(7) if f(x) = 3𝑥 − 2.

2. f(7) = 3(7) − 2
f(7) = 21 − 2
f(7) = 𝟏𝟗
Example
Evaluate f(x) = 2𝑥 + 1 if x= 3𝑥 − 1

f 𝑥 = 2𝑥 + 1
f 3𝑥 − 1 = 2(3𝑥 − 1) + 1
f 3𝑥 − 1 = 6𝑥 − 2 + 1
f 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟏 = 𝟔𝒙 − 𝟏
REMEMBER!
f(x) means “the value of f at x,” It does not mean “f times
x.”
Letters other than f such as G and H or g and h can also
be used.
f is the name of the function and f(x) is the value of the
function at x.
It is recommended putting the substituted value inside the
parenthesis ( ), so you don’t make mistakes.
PRACTICE EXERCISE
Evaluate each function. Write your solution in your
notebook.

1. Given the function 𝑓 x = 4x + 2 evaluate f(-1).

2. Given the function h n = 3n − 4 evaluate h(-6).
3. Given the function w a = a − 1 evaluate w(0).
4. Given the function 𝑓 x = 2x + 1 evaluate f(3).
5. Given the function g x = 3x − 5 evaluate g(-2).
