OPERATIONS
OF
FUNCTION
REVIEW: WHAT IS A
FUNCTION?

• A relationship where every domain

(x value has exactly one unique
range (y value).
• Sometimes we talk about a
FUNCTION MACHINE, where a
rule is applied to each input of x
FUNCTION OPERATIONS
Addition :  f  g ( x)  f x   g x 
Subtractio n :  f  g x   f x   g x 
Multiplica tion :  f  g x   f x  g x 
f f x 
Division :  x   where gx   0
g g x 
Example 1: Given: f(x) = 3x – 5 and
g(x) = x + 2, find the following.
a. (f + g) (x) b. (f - g) (x)
= f(x) + g(x) = f(x) - g(x)
= (3x – 5) + (x + 2) = (3x – 5) - (x + 2)
= 3x – 5 + x + 2 = 3x – 5 - x - 2
= 4x - 3 = 2x - 7
f(x) + g(x) = 4x - 3 f(x) - g(x) = 2x - 7
Example 1: Given: f(x) = 3x – 5 and
g(x) = x + 2, find the following.
c. (f ● g) (x) d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x) ● g(x) =
= (3x – 5)(x + 2) =
= + 6x - 5x - 10
= + x - 10 𝑓 ( 𝑥) 3 𝑥 −5

𝑔 ( 𝑥) 𝑥 +2

Example 2: Given: f(x) = 6x + 1 and
g(x) = 5x - 4, find the following.
a. (f + g) (x) b. (f - g) (x)
= f(x) + g(x) = f(x) - g(x)
= (6x + 1) + (5x - 4) = (6x + 1) - (5x - 4)
= 6x + 1 + 5x - 4 = 6x + 1 - 5x + 4
= 11x - 3 =x +5
f(x) + g(x) = 11x - 3 f(x) - g(x) = x + 5
Example 2: Given: f(x) = 6x + 1 and
g(x) = 5x - 4, find the following.
c. (f ● g) (x) d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x) ● g(x) =
= (6x + 1)(5x - 4) =
= - 24x + 5x - 4
= - 19 x - 4 𝑓 ( 𝑥) 6 𝑥+1
=
𝑔 ( 𝑥) 5 𝑥 − 4
f(x) ● g(x) = 4
Example 3: Given: f(x) = and
g(x) = x - 9, find the following.
a. (f + g) (x) b. (f - g) (x)
= f(x) + g(x) = f(x) - g(x)
= ( ) + (x - 9) = ( ) - (x - 9 )
= +x-9 = -x +9
=+x -6 =x + 12
f(x) + g(x) = + x - 6 f(x) - g(x) = x + 12
Example 3: Given: f(x) = and
g(x) = x - 9, find the following.
c. (f ● g) (x) d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x) ● g(x) =
= ( )(x - 9) =
= - 9 + 3x - 27
f(x) ● 𝑓 ( 𝑥) 𝑥 2 +3
