STUDENT PROJECT REPORT GUIDELINES AVIONICS ENGG DEPT, CAE

Layout 1. Typical layout of the chapters of a project report is given below: (a) Project overview

(b) Review of literature: includes what has been done so far in the particular field of knowledge to which the project belongs and what is the motivation behind the current project. (c) (d) (e) 2. Theoretical background: one or more chapters Design and fabrication: one or more chapters Results, conclusions, recommendations: one or more chapters

In addition, it is important to include the following: (a) Abstract. The abstract is typically written as a single paragraph which is not numbered. It must briefly state what is the project about and what has been achieved. A good thumb rule for writing an abstract is to focus on the following aspects of the project: what, why and how. (b) (c) Table of Contents, List of figures and list of tables.

3. Dedications and acknowledgements may be included after the Abstract and before the Table of Contents. All of these and the pages mentioned in paragraph 2 above are included before the first chapter and all pages before the first chapter are numbered in Roman numerals. Samples of the title and subsequent pages of project report are enclosed. Students must adhere to the format, spacing and service writing rules. Soft copy may be obtained from the undersigned. 4. References, appendices and glossary are included at the end.

References/Citations 5. Relevant works must be cited wherever information is extracted from them, and all references may be placed at the end of the report. The student must beware of all acts that may amount to plagiarism. The recommended method for citing a work is [12],

where the number 12 refers to the index of the cited work in your list of references included at the end of the report. The sequence in which citations appear in the list of references must be same as the order in which they appear in the text; i.e. the first work cited in the report must be the first citation in the list of references and so on. Figure/Tables/Equations 6. All figures/plots in the report must be readable and of appropriate size. Students are discouraged to copy from web or other sources and are encouraged to make their own drawings/figures. If at all they are copied from a PDF file, then student should retain the aspect ratio of the original figure, especially in case of plots and graphs. Moreover, relevant work from where a figure/table is extracted must be cited. 7. Figure/table numbers must be numbered continuously in a chapter and must be referred to as shown: Fig. 4-1, Table 5-2. Do not refer to a Figure/Table by only using words like below or above, e.g. In the figure below... They should be referred to by their numbers. 8. All Figures/tables must have a caption which should carry as much information about it as possible. In general, one should be able to understand a plot/graph by looking at its caption. The figures caption should be placed below it while the tables caption should be above it. 9. All equations must have a number which must run continuously in a chapter, e.g. 4.1. The equations may be referred to as shown: Eq. (4.1). 10. Ensure that all figures and tables are referred to in the text. There is no use of any figure/table/equation, if it is not referred to in the text. Miscellaneous 11. The report must conform to the general rules of service writing.

12. There should be no spelling/grammatical/service writing mistakes. All service ranks should be spelt correctly. 13. Program, codes, technical details of hardware such as ICs must be placed in the appendix; do not include such details in the main body. Moreover, appendices must be properly referred to in the main body of the report. For example, Pin configuration of this IC is included in Appendix A. 14. Be consistent in your style. If, for example, you use bold letters in figures caption, then the same style must be followed throughout.

15. Do not try to expand your report by adding extra information and figures. Include only what is relevant. Review of literature must especially be very concise and relevant. 16. Abbreviations/acronyms must be defined where they are used the first time and then abbreviations must be used subsequently. It is not mandatory but a good idea to include a glossary or list of abbreviations at the end of the report. 17. Always explain your results; dont just include a plot/graph/table and leave it to the reader to draw their own conclusions. 18. Students are also encouraged to see some previous reports before preparing their own.
