Theoretical Background

This section provides the theories and concepts that are

relevant to the topic. One of the theories the study is anchored to is on the

Database Theory and it is further supported by the systems development life

cycle (SDLC).

The Database Theory encapsulates a broad range of topics related to the

study and research of the theoretical realm of databases and database

management systems. Most personal or industrial data is simply stored in files

and accessed via simple programs. Indeed, the importance of collecting,

evaluating, and managing the data has significantly increased with time. The

concept of data is constantly evolving and transforming in the business world. It

has not only introduced new depths for the companies but has also made it more

challenging to operate. However, precise data recording, monitoring, and storing

can help organizations in addressing those challenges (Wegener, 2021).

In connection with the proposed study, Database Theory might be a great

help because it provides a generic solution to the system. It can benefit

researchers in making a clear distinction between how data is kept or manage

and how it is accessible via queries, as well as designing data that is redundancy-

free and can be retrieved, edited, and added to without the issues that might

arise when redundancy is prevalent. Understanding the concept of database

theory is vital as greater amounts of data information and their possible

applications continue to transform multiple industries.

A systems development life cycle is composed of a number of clearly

defined and distinct work phases which are used by systems engineers and

systems developers to plan for, design, build, test, and deliver information

system. Like anything that is manufactured on an assembly line, an SDLC aims to

produce high-quality systems that meet or exceed customer expectations, based

on customer requirements, by delivering systems which move through each

clearly defined phase, within scheduled time frames and cost estimates

( Systems Development Life Cycle, 2013).

According to Onesmus Mbaabu (2021), the systems development life cycle

enables developers to design and build high-quality software products. This is

because they follow a systematic process that allows them to test the software

before it is rolled out.

In relation to systems development life cycle (SDLC), organizations and

authorities these days rely upon technology more than ever to assist create

efficient innovations and practices. Today’s technological era, learning new

technology and evolving with change is very important such as integration of

software development process to create an acceptable system architecture to

manage church operations especially reservation of mass schedules. As

generation continues to advance, SDLC has been widely used to improve the

work and productivity of employees. Modern technology gives many effective

tools and that church offices can make use of in managing, organizing staff

workloads and transformation of manual process into web- based applications.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This section presents the ideas and concepts according to various authors

and related studies that are relevant to the study which will serve as the

researchers guide in developing the system.

Review of Related Literature

The church has always been known for its, simplicity as well as frugal

lifestyle. This could be one of the reasons why with technological advancement

nowadays most churches in our region don’t have a computer automated system

for the records and are still using paper-based system as they used until now.

However, with the demands of the times, arguments as to make use or not use

modern technology are surfacing.

In a mass managing system, just a glance at your calendar allows you to

see which masses are available to book intentions on, (Mass Intention

Inc. ,2018). With the use of the system, the hand written paper works will

became insignificant and the previous documents will be put to an archive for

future purposes.

The system is highly beneficial to the parish secretary since it allows him

or her to complete the lengthy process in a matter of seconds. Furthermore,

parishioners who desire to arrange a mass can do so online; all they need is an

internet-capable device and an internet connection. The technology allows users

to view the mass schedule as well as the types of masses that are offered on a

given date.

Another method that is possibly comparable to the mass scheduling

system is the appointment scheduling system, which is an internet-based

system. The client must use the internet to access the appointment scheduler

website. They can schedule an appointment from anywhere in the world as long

as they have access to the internet.

A company of inov8tiv (2017) discussed that a church runs in very much

the same way any typical organization. It receives inputs (believers/staff) from

the society, processes, and procedures, and followed up with outputs (spiritually

lifted believers/paid staff).

Roy Sylvan (2017) has a Ph.D. in communication studies. He directed a

large city department of aging, was COO of a consulting company and provided

management training to companies. Writing for more than 40 years, Sylvan has

authored articles in trade journals, magazines and blogs, and wrote a how-to

book on starting a business. There are three key benefits of converting a manual

accounting system to an electronic accounting system.

Moreover, the advent of information technology has opened the way for

the creation of information systems today. Many organizations have transitioned

to automated information systems in recent years, while others continue to use

the manual system for record keeping. Churches and parishes must have an

information system in place to keep track of data and save it in a database.

Generally, a substantial contribution of technological innovation is made to

the advancement of church organization with goals and procedures in order to

adapt or convert the manual process into a web-based system for church

management purposes. As a result, the researchers of the proposed system

attain effectiveness and efficiency that the church anchored in the study must

incorporate information and technology into its operations.

Review of Related Studies

Several studies based on various sources that examine the

implementation of a web-based system for church management that will serve as

a springboard for the relevance of the system's fundamental features.

The project entitled Parish Office Computer-Based Record Keeping System

will be implemented in parish office where users of this system can encode

records of baptismal, marriage records, wedding records, death records and

schedule of mass. With Parish Office Computer-Based Record Keeping System,

inputs of data will be made faster, scheduling of masses will be easier, baptism

and wedding and special blessings services can be reserved and scheduled

quickly by the personnel of the said office (inettutor.com, 2019).

Another related project, entitled “Church Management System,” is

intended for church organizations to use in planning and executing various

church events. The traditional way of administering church events is done

manually, which can be challenging for members of organizations owing to

physical restrictions and time limits. The project’s researchers presented an IT-

based solution to address the issues with the manual approach of church event

management. The researchers want to create an automated Church Event

Management System to make planning and administering church activities

easier.
To complete an operational system, the researchers use the Software

Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to create the project. IT professionals will

examine the developed system in order to improve its functionality. The system’s

installation will greatly assist church organizations. It will help them with

everything from event booking to event preparation. All of the issues that

plagued the manual procedure will be resolved by the technology.

The proponents believed that Sta. Teresa de Avila Parish must have an

automated information system to change their old way of manipulating records

rather than storing it in shelves and cabinets. Consequently, the authors decided

to create a system to answer the problems within the walls of the parish. In this

study, Sta. Teresa de Avila Parish Transaction Processing and Information

System will benefit the involved parishioners in controlling and operating the

transactions. This will be a great help in the development and the growth of the

church.

The systems mentioned above will serve as the foundation for our group's

research. We can create an orderly and manageable computer-based mass

scheduler with SMS Notification that has consistent functionality and operation.

When combined with mass schedule and SMS Notification, this can aid data

organization in the Local Church organization. Both studies are related to the

need of retaining all records through the proposed system, which will ensure that

such files are secure and accessible for processing and church transactions. It

also ensures that jobs will be easier, faster, and more efficient for the

organization's advantage.
