Review

Everybody knows the story of The Wizard of Oz, but the well known producer Marc Platt
decided to show the audience a new point of view. “ Wicked – The musical “ took by surprinse
the fans of Oz, as Stephen Schwarts and Winnie Halzman made a team in order to make the
whole story known. The play is based on the book with the same name and tells the story behinf
the green skin and pointy hat of the Wicked Witch, Elphaba and how she became wicked.

The plot revolves around young woman, Elphaba who is an outsider and an outcast, rejected
because of her green skin. Her father hates her, everyone she goes to school with makes fun of
her and Galinda, her room mate, is the perfect popular girl type. Throughout the story, they
become best friends. Unfortunately, Elphaba is made out to be an evil witch as she tries to save
the world and expose the Wizard, who was an impostor. Despite all of her problems and
loneliness, she learns to rise above the negativity, what love truly is and embrace who she is.
Eventhough she saves her friends and also the City of Oz, she accept her fate in order to ensure
Galinda has the chance to maintain the peace. The story reaches a dramatic climax when Elphaba
embraces her wickedness and sings “ Defying Gravity” , the show’s hit song, as she floats up on
her broom.

The play has a strong cast , as Indina Menzel impersonates young Elphaba and Kristin
Chenoweth the popular Galinda, the Good Witch. The acting is moving, as Oliver Saville, Fyero,
Elphaba’s lover, and Mark Curry, the Wizard of Oz, join the powerful duo of best friends. Also,
the lights and setting take the musical to a new level ; throughtout the show the gears move, the
clock ticks and lights change as the story progresses to reflect the feelings of the characters and
the songs.

The songs and the vocals took aback the audience, as Elphaba ‘s journey becomes a fresh and
heart-warming story.
The musical has powerful and inspirational messages and is not a play that can be passively
watched without becoming attached to. I would recommend “Wicked” to any fan of the musical
theatre or to anyone who just likes to be entertained.
