Cloning More Than Horses

T
he next clones in the
Texas Panhandle
may have horns and
cloven hooves.
At least, that’s what veteri-
narian Gregg Veneklasen and
rancher Jason Abraham hope.
The two men, working with
ViaGen, already have cloned
horses on the ground, ranging
from a clone of cutting great
Lynx Melody to one of world-
record bucking bronc Airwolf
to Clayton, clone of barrel horse
great Scamper.
Now they want to try cloning
trophy game animals, starting
with whitetail and mule deer.
“The raising of deer in Texas
is a multibillion-dollar industry,”
Veneklasen said.
The end result of the breeding
is trophy-quality game animals.
Until now, breeders have simply
turned a good buck in with a
herd of does and more or less
hoped for the best. Veneklasen’s
goal is twofold: clone the best
trophy-quality bucks and, after
identifying the does that do the
best job of bearing such bucks,
clone those females, as well.

can breed, he said, but it comes
at a time when horse breeding is
generally dormant.
“There’s been some concern,
‘Well, are you going to turn
these deer out in the wild?’
Absolutely not. We might put
some wild does in with those
[cloned bucks], but the bucks
going out in the wild, that’s not
going to happen. This is for
farm-raised, ranch-raised ani-
mals, and there’s enough people
doing it that there’s a demand
for cloning.”
Veneklasen said he and
Abraham are in it for the long
haul, and he already is visualiz-
ing the day when an endangered
species could be cloned to save it
from extinction.
“It’s going to be a great
research project,” he said. “We
can maybe look at some stuff
that’s never been looked at.” v
