 Exam ends: October 19, 2022, 1:00PM
 Send me an email of your answers in one file
 The file name should be: your first name_chem701_takehome.docx

1. Suppose one wished to maintain a population inversion between the ground (1s 22s22p3) and
4
D3/2 excited states of atomic nitrogen by simple heating. The term value for the 4D3/2 state is
19244 cm-1. What temperature would be necessary to maintain double the number of N atoms
in the excited state, relative to the ground state? What is the significance of the result you
obtain? (Hint: Nu/Nl= (2J+1)u/(2J+1)l e-E/kT)
2. Determine the allowed term symbols 2S+1L for an atom having the configuration (KK)4s 23d2. Show
your work.
3. Identification of the 21 cm line of H opened the door for the development of radio astronomy,
hyperfine structure is also utilized in building the atomic clock. Write an assay describing the
theoretical basis of the clock, how it is built, and how it works *.
4. You are designing a space probe to look for signs of intelligent life on the planet Neptune by
detecting spectra of H and D which theory suggests are given off by two Neptunian species:
protonians and deutronians. You decide to use high-resolution atomic spectroscopy to detect
and differentiate the two species. Describe the theoretical basics of your probe.
