Accounting as it is known now,
began with the development of
the commercial republics of Italy.
In 1340, Massari of Genoa was
the first to keep double entry
books according to Edward
Peragollo. But, the first printed
text that contained accounting and
included the double entry system
was the one by Luca Pacioli
(1445-1514). Since then,
accounting has been defined as a
science of recording, classifying
and analyzing financial
information. It has also been
called the Language of Business.
Accounting, in the United States,
may be divided in three main
areas: (1) Public Accounting, (2)
Private Accounting, and (3)
Governmental Accounting.
Public Accounting offers services
to the general public on a fee
basis. The Public Accountant may
work for an individual, or for a
small or medium business. In this
capacity he may set up
accounting systems, provide
management counseling service,
audit the accounts, express his
opinion on the financial
statements, and/or prepare tax
returns. He may work by himself
or join other accountants and form
an Accounting firm or CPA firm. In
the United States the four largest
Accounting firms that audit most
of the largest and best known
corporations in the world are
known as the Big Four.

La contabilidad, tal y como se
conoce ahora, comenzó con el
desarrollo de las repúblicas
comerciales de Italia. En 1340,
Massari de Génova fue el primero
en llevar libros de doble partida,
según Edward Peragollo. Pero, el
primer texto impreso que contenía
la contabilidad e incluía el sistema
de partida doble fue el de Luca
Pacioli (1445-1514). Desde
entonces, la contabilidad se
define como una ciencia que
registra, clasifica y analiza la
información financiera. También
se le ha llamado el lenguaje de
los negocios.
La contabilidad, en Estados
Unidos, puede dividirse en tres
áreas principales: (1) Contabilidad
pública, (2) Contabilidad privada y
(3) Contabilidad gubernamental.
La contabilidad pública ofrece
servicios al público en general
sobre la base de honorarios. El
contable público puede trabajar
para un particular o para una
pequeña o mediana empresa. En
calidad de tal, puede establecer
sistemas de contabilidad, prestar
servicios de asesoramiento en
materia de gestión, auditar las
cuentas, expresar su opinión
sobre los estados financieros y/o
preparar declaraciones fiscales.
Puede trabajar por su cuenta o
unirse a otros contables y formar
una empresa de contabilidad o
CPA. En Estados Unidos, las
cuatro mayores empresas de
contabilidad que auditan a la
mayoría de las corporaciones
más grandes y conocidas del
mundo se conocen como las
Cuatro Grandes.
Private Accounting is when an
accountant works for a single
enterprise as a part of the
personnel of the business and is
included in the payroll. He may
prepare reports, supervise the
recording of business
transactions, and prepare
statements for management and
other interested parties. He also
prepares tax returns and reports
required by government agencies.
Governmental Accounting is the
accounting for the State or a
governmental agency. The main
governmental agencies in the
United States related to
accounting are:
Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC): A
governmental agency deeply
involved in accounting,
establishing requirements
regarding the content of financial
statements and the reporting
standards to be followed.
Internal Revenue Service (IRS): A
governmental agency to analyze
and investigate the records of
persons and businesses subject
to income and other taxes.
General Accounting Office (GAO):
An arm of the Congress that
audits government agencies and
operations. It is similar as the
Contraloría General de la
República in Peru.
The Public Accountant in the
United States is licensed as
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
and he has to pass a rigorous
examination to get the license to
practice. This examination is
administered twice a year by the
American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants (AICPA) and
is required by all states in USA.
La contabilidad privada es cuando un
contable trabaja para una sola
empresa como parte del personal de
la misma y está incluido en la
nómina. Puede preparar informes,
supervisar el registro de las
transacciones comerciales y preparar
estados de cuentas para la dirección
y otras partes interesadas. También
prepara las declaraciones de
impuestos y los informes requeridos
por los organismos gubernamentales.
La contabilidad gubernamental es la
contabilidad del Estado o de un
organismo gubernamental. Los
principales organismos
gubernamentales de Estados Unidos
relacionados con la contabilidad son
Comisión de Valores y Bolsa (SEC):
Una agencia gubernamental
profundamente implicada en la
contabilidad, que establece los
requisitos relativos al contenido de
los estados financieros y las normas
de información que deben seguirse.
Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS):
Una agencia gubernamental para
analizar e investigar los registros de
personas y empresas sujetas a
impuestos sobre la renta y otros.
Oficina General de Contabilidad
(GAO): Una rama del Congreso que
audita las agencias y operaciones del
gobierno. Es similar a la Contraloría
General de la República en Perú.
El Contador Público en los Estados
Unidos es licenciado como Contador
Público Certificado (CPA) y tiene que
pasar un riguroso examen para
obtener la licencia para ejercer.
Este examen es administrado dos
veces al año por el Instituto
Americano de Contadores Públicos
Certificados (AICPA) y es requerido
por todos los estados en USA.
