ALAMAT NG PINYA (The Legend of Pineapple)

The story is about Aling Rosa and her spoiled daughter Pina. Pina is a lazy
girl. When her mother fell ill, Pina was asked to prepare some porridge, but she
was too lazy to look for the ladle. Then, her mother wished that Pina had a
thousand eyes so that she could find what she was looking for, Pina's mother
said to her. That day was the last time anyone saw Pina. One day, her mother
was sweeping when she saw a strange plant growing where Pina used to play.
She then called the plant “Pinya” or pineapple in English. Because of her
spoiled attitude, Pina was supposedly cursed and turned into a plant with a
thousand eyes. This legend portrays the origin of the Pineapple and includes the
theme of the importance of obedience and learning how to do household
chores. It also teaches the value of neatness and tidiness.

Filipino legend is a traditional story that describes the origin of things and
the world. This also explains supernatural events, mysteries, and cultural
traditions. Legends are known to be stories about the origin of things that are
passed down to generations, it’s evident that Filipinos are creative in making
stories because our culture is rich with a variety of legends in every fruit and
place in our country. Filipino legends tend to contain moral lessons to teach
children the right values and behavior. Legends about the creation of places
like mountains, lakes, and rivers are also used to remind people to respect
nature and our environment. Each story also mirrors the everyday life
experiences and thoughts of the people.
