Unit One: Features of Higher Education

Reflective Activity 1 – P. 8

Discuss the mission of your university from the point of view of content, relevance,
clarity, precision, etc

1. Reflection on the Mission :- The mission of Injibara University is Producing competent,

entrepreneurial and responsible graduates by providing quality, relevant and equitable education
and training; conducting problem-solving researches, and providing demand driven community
services. The mission, in my opinion, has solid content and is relevant, clear, and precise.
However, putting practices into place requires a lot of work. Let take example, since the opining
of Injibara University many research and community services were done. I have doubt whether
those done activity practical alleviate the community problem.

2. Reflection on Vision ;- The Vissionof Injibara university is to be one of the three best
comprehensive Universities in Ethiopia in 2030. It is easy to argue that the declared vision for our
institution is overly ambitious. I don't believe it can be useful because the institution is brand new. The
good news is that even if we cannot achieve it by 2030, it is still possible to do so for a considerable
amount of time. It's just a matter of time, I'm saying.

3. How effectively are the teachers in your HEI working towards realizing the mission and vision
of the institution?

Without the participation of all stakeholders, an organization's mission and vision cannot be
accomplished. Although it is tough to say we are effective, I can state that the majority of academic
staff members strive to uphold the goal and vision of our university. In our university teachers are
working towards realizing the mission and vision of the institution by doing the following:-

 Complying with the rules and policies of the university,

 Striving for academic excellence, participating actively in school activities,
 Becoming a role model, passing the board exams, and conducting research.

4. What are the core values of your institution?

The main core values of our university Injibara are the following:- Customer First, Quality in All,
Academic Freedom, Value for Indigenous Knowledge, Empowering Entrepreneurship, Diversity and
Tolerance, Sustainability, Ethical Commitment, Team Work and Networking.

5 . To what extent are the above core values practiced?

Despite having the best core values, there are numerous barriers that prevent their real execution. For instance,
present curricula do not include the fundamental value of giving importance to indigenous knowledge, despite it
being one of the stated basic values. These professed values, as far as I can tell, were there in every company;
the issue is the extent to which we actually put them into effect. When I say this, I don't intend to imply that our
intuition doesn't put all of these essential ideals into practice.

The Core values of our university are important because they provide a shared understanding of what we value
as an institution, collectively framing our institution's desired culture. As much as posible we are guided by our
vision and mission and our core values support our work to advance our mission that enhancing the teaching
learnig activites. BUT the above core values are not fully implmented equaliy to the university teachers.

Reflective Activity 2 - P. 8

1. How relevant and important are the various leadership positions for the effective functioning
of HEIs?
One of the most crucial elements in determining the future of any institution is leadership.
However, leaders in higher education, perhaps more so than in many other organizations, must take
into account, influence, and have an impact on a variety of sometimes opposing stakeholders'
interests, including those of students, faculty, staff, department heads, and government and
educational authorities. They must exhibit the capacity to collaborate politely and successfully with
a sizable diversity of individuals and perspectives.
Academic leaders must make sure their institution has the resources to react swiftly and effectively
to the issues it faces practically constantly. To accomplish this, they must take the initiative to
position themselves as change agents and, more importantly, to implement change in a way that
will benefit their employees and cultivate the necessary behaviors.
2. To what extent does the top leadership understand and support the efforts of lower academic
units to achieve the ultimate goals of the institution?
The top leader can comprehend and support lower academic units despite the length and
complexity of HEIs' top-down and bottom-up report structures. The organizational structure of
HEIs, in my opinion, need upgrading.
3. From the point of view of need and efficiency, how satisfactory is the organization of HEIs?

As I attempted to explain in response to the second question, I do not feel comfortable with the
existing organizational structure of HEIs since there is a great deal of effort that is duplicated, and
occasionally there are issues with the job descriptions for specific positions.

Reflective Activity 3 - Pp. 8 - 9

1. How reasonable are the rights and duties of the academic staff as indicated in the Senate
Legislation of your University?

- Based on my understanding the Injibara University Senate legislation is somewhat good because the
academic staff can exercise their rights and duties freely without any intervention and provide the
chance to implement their own contribution for quality education. In addition, Each member of the
academic staff is can enhance the learning environment through instruction, research, scholarly activity,
and service that support the institutional mission. Every member of the academic staff, of whatever rank,
shall at all times be held responsible for competent and effective performance of his/her duties/workload
expectations and foster collegial relationships with supervisors, peers, students, and the University
community.

2. To what extent are higher education teachers in your university performing according to their
duties and responsibilities as indicated in the Senate Legislation?
Teachers in Injibara University are performing according to the duties and responsibilities as indicated
in the Senate Legislation but it varies among the teacher. In my opinion all academic staff is abide by
senate legislation. But sometime due to negligence there might be a room for not performing according
to their duties and responsibilities as indicated in the Senate Legislation.
