Most of us dream of going to abroad when it comes to pursuing higher studies
to enroll ourselves in the top ivy league colleges. But one such Ivy league college which has come in the spotlight recently is Stanford University. Stanford University has created a new set of restrictions for their campus. It has come up with a list of words which are no longer deemed fit for use from being used in the campus. And before you think, NO! these are not some racist or sexist words, but these are common words that you and me use in our day-to- day lives. Some of the words on the list of “banned” words are – “Stand-Up meeting” which allegedly is offensive to people who are paralyzed and can not stand. The word “stand up meeting” has been replaced with the word “Quick meeting”; The word “American” is deemed as imprecise language and the word “US citizen” is to be used, because in Stanford’s words, the word “American” is often used to represent only the citizens of the US thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country when in fact America is group of a total 40+ countries; You cannot even use the word “Brave” because that is reserved for the Native people and no, there are no alternative words for brave mentioned in the list. You simply cannot use the word “Brave”; The word “Addicted” is been replaced with “Devoted”, which makes absolutely no sense. No one in their right mind would say – “I’m devoted to alcohol” instead of saying “I’m addicted to alcohol”; The word “Submit” has been removed and has been replaced by “Process” and the word African-American has been replaced with “Black”, even though that is completely wrong because their skin colours are technically dark brown(but let’s not get too much into the technicalities); Instead of the word “immigrant”, the people are asked to use “ Person who has immigrated”; The word “GRANDFATHER” cannot be used either; Phrases such as “Long Time, No see” cannot be used because apparently that’s offensive and discriminatory towards people who are blind and cannot see. The words “Trigger Warning” which is used to caution people about any sensitive content is now replaced with words such as “Content Note” because apparently the words “Trigger Warning” itself would Trigger a set group of people. No, it’s not a joke (Even though we want it to be); The name “Karen” has been banned because it is used to represent a woke lady and all these things has even caused ELON MUSK to call out Stanford on twitter asking them, what exactly is that they are trying to achieve. Going by the logic of Stanford, isn’t talking “discriminatory" towards dumb people? The Stanford Faculty also has a distorting ratio of 132 democrats (The left wing) for every 1 Republican (The right wing). This also goes out to show that the administration of Stanford is not centrist at all and that has repercussions.
